Radford Track & Field Smashes Multiple Records, Blows Past Hokies in Women’s 4x400 Meter Relay

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Radford indoor track and field teams were back in action and saw several school records come tumbling down on at the Hokie Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

"We are very happy with how the team performed this weekend," said Director of Track & Field Shelli Sayers. "It is still early in the season and we are not even at our best yet. Our young athletes really stepped up to the challenge. Quinlan Beegle is really starting to find his role and lead the men's program."

THE BASICS
Results: N/A (No Team Score)
Meet: Hokie Invitational
Location: Rector Field at Virginia Tech (Blacksburg, Va.)
Final Results

NOTABLES
  • The women's 300-meter race was one of the best races in Radford Track history. Jeylah Hamrick, who already had the school record, rebroke the top time by almost two full seconds with a time of 38.22 in a win. Her time is also the Big South record. The trio of Mattie Flores, Raichelle Cornelius, and Janaya Moore all broke the 40-second barrier, with each of their times putting them in the top four on the Radford all-time performance list for the event.
  • The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Jordan Jackson, Flores, Cornelius, and Hamrick improved on their time from last week's win by three seconds to beat Virginia Tech's A team and Appalachian State. Their time of 3:44.20 is new school record.
  • Beegle became the first athlete to enter a new name in the men's school record book this season. His time of 2:28.74 in the 1000-meter race was over three seconds better than Brian Gorwitz's record set in 2013 and good enough for fifth overall.
  • Senior Sophie Magson bumped up on the all-time performance list in multiple categories. She added a new personal record with a second-place finish in the one mile on Saturday. The time of 4:51.65 is the third best on the all-time performance list. Magson also took second with a 9:36.47 in the 3000-meters, moving up to second on that list as well.
  • Makayla Nelson set a new personal record and moved up to sixth on the all-time performance list with a time of 7.69.
  • Freshman Cora Gentzel put in the fourth-best performance in Radford history in the 1000-meters, finishing sixth with a time of 3:00.54. Mia Farley also improved and ran the eighth best time on the all-time performance list with a time of 3:05.87.
  • Jaylen Rosser etched her name in the all-time performance list for weight throw, moving up to sixth with a throw of 16.90 meters (55'5.5"). It was good enough for a seventh place finish and the fourth best among non-power school athletes.
  • Two-time Big South Freshman of the Week Jaelynn Joiner advanced into the finals and ultimately took sixth in the long jump with a mark of 5.85 meters (19'2.5").
  • Charlie Dance put himself into third on the all-time performance list with a time of 4:15.26 (6th place) in the one mile. Beegle was close behind with a personal best time of 4:16.30.
