SCOUTING THE BEARS
California enters the 2026-27 season looking to build off an impressive 20-win campaign last season that included a 9-9 mark in ACC play. Head Coach Mark Madsen is entering his fourth season at the helm seeing consistent improvement year-over-year most recently advancing to the second round of the NIT at the end of last season. The Bears were picked to finish 15th in a competitive ACC preseason poll.
The Bears also debuted their season on Monday night, defeating Division II Adams State 115-86. California scored 66 first half points for an early 29 point lead before playing an even 49-49 second half. Of the 18 rostered Bears, 14 saw action in the game and were led by a trio of 20+ point scorers including Sammie Yeaney, Nojus Indrusaitis and Michael Cooper.
BACK OUT WEST
Opening week marks Radford's first trip to California for the Highlanders since 2017. Radford visited San Francisco for the two teams' only match up as a part of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic. The Dons came out victorious in that meeting 52-41. Radford was able to rebound and grab the crown in their half of the bracket of that Classic, defeating North Carolina A&T and UC Davis. Wednesday night's meeting with California will mark the first ever between the two programs.
TIDYING UP THE BOX SCORE
The Highlanders' biggest note to clean up before Wednesday night's game will be cleaning up fouls and turnovers. The team committed 19 turnovers which their opponent Dons were able to convert into 21 points. The turnovers were the most for Radford in a single game since committing 20 while facing Davidson in 2021. Foul trouble also limited Radford and saw the team spread minutes through the bench as two starters fouled out.
Despite the miscues, when Radford possessed the ball cleanly, they were efficient and competitive throughout their game with San Francisco. The team out shot their hosts 44.0% to 42.1% overall and at the three-point line 33.3% to 26.9%. Five different Highlanders sunk three pointers while nine of 11 players that checked in scored.
HIGHLANDERS TO WATCH
Highlighting Radford's box score at the Dons was an expected name and a pair of names the Highlander faithful will hear more throughout the season. Frederik Erichsen looked strong in his first start for Radford after appearing in all 32 games last season. The Denmark native scored a team-high 12 points and seven rebounds. A fellow sophomore Ja'Corey Robinson looked great in his first start scoring in double figures while also recording a team best five assists. Mathieu Grujicic also started and scored 11 points behind a pair of threes over 26 minutes played.
