BUIES CREEK, N.C. –The Radford softball program came up short against a pair of tough opponents Friday afternoon in the first day of the Campbell Invitational. In the first game of the day, Radford fell to Iowa 11-3 before also going down to Miami (OH) in the second game 7-1.
Â
GAME ONE
After a relatively quiet start to game one, Iowa struck with a force in the second hitting a grand slam that would supply all the runs they'd need in the game. In the third, the Hawkeyes followed with a three-run homer that forced a pitching change in a 7-0 game. Madison Sabo entered, and helped extend the game with some strong relief work.
Â
Needing a spark, Radford got just that in the bottom of the third. Grace Bechtol drew a walk and Amanda Lee singled to put a pair on. Malli Groves continued her incredible start to the season with a three-run home run that pulled the game back within four at 7-3.
Â
Sabo tossed a clean fourth and Radford had another scoring opportunity cut short in the bottom half. After Isabel Harrison singled, Bechtol doubled but Iowa was able to cut the runner at the plate to keep it a four-run game. A multi hour rain delay stalled the game in the fifth, but on the other side of it Sabo kept Iowa scoreless again.
Â
Radford's offense wasn't able to respond and Iowa was able to tag on four more runs in the seventh after loading the bases with two outs. The Highlanders were held quiet in the bottom of the seventh and fell 11-4 in their first game of the day.
Â
GAME TWO
Starting pitcher Morgan Cooper was able to overcome a rough start to her opening frame as three runners reached via walks for Miami (OH). With two strikeouts, Cooper escaped any damage to keep it a 0-0 game. The Highlanders offense was held hitless through the first three innings and in the bottom of the third the Redhawks struck for the game's first runs.
Â
Miami (OH) would grab a 2-0 lead behind a home run and would add a third run in the fourth off a sacrifice fly. Radford would get one back in the fifth as Abby Bossler singled, moved to second on a groundout and came home on an Amber Wolfe RBI single with two outs.
Â
The Redhawks took control for the rest of the game, however, as Radford's offense wasn't able to mount the comeback. In the sixth Miami (OH) got two more runs of another homer and a pair of runs from a triple and two-out single. Now behind 7-1, Radford's offense was held quiet once again in the seventh for the tough final.
Â
UP NEXT
Radford will look to bounce back when they face the same pair of opponents tomorrow. Action begins at 10:00 a.m. against Miami (OH) before the team rematches Iowa again at 12:30 p.m.
