RADFORD, Va. – Brent Chumbley has been officially named head track and field coach at Radford University, as announced by the Director of Athletics Robert Lineburg Monday. Chumbley spent the 2007-08 campaign as the interim head coach.
“Brent has done an excellent job leading our program this year,” said Lineburg. “He is an outstanding teacher who runs a disciplined program. We are looking forward to continued success in track and field in the coming years.”
In his first season directing the Highlanders, the men's indoor track and field team finished second at the conference championships, while the women's squad wasn't far behind as they concluded the indoor slate fourth in the standings. To go along with their impressive showing at the Big South Championships, the men's indoor squad won the league's sportsmanship award. Six members of the outdoor track and field squad qualified for the NCAA Regional, including Kyle Morse, who was the East Region hammer throw champion and became the fourth All-American in school history with an 11th place finish at the 2008 NCAA Championships.
“I am truly honored and excited to be the Director of Track and Field here at Radford,” said Coach Chumbley. “I appreciate the opportunity that President Kyle and Mr. Lineburg have given me and would like to thank them for their support during my last year as Interim Director.”
A native of Paris, Ky., Chumbley spent four years at Illinois State (2002-06) as its throws coach before joining the Radford track and field staff in 2006.
While at Illinois State, Chumbley produced one United States Olympic Trials qualifier, two NCAA Championship qualifiers, 17 NCAA Regional qualifiers, eight conference champions and 23 All-Conference performances. In addition, Chumbley helped guide his squad in setting four new school records and one conference record.
Prior to his four seasons at Illinois State, Chumbley served on the staff at Murray State (2001-02) for one season.
Chumbley earned his master's degree in physical education from Hastings College (Hastings, Neb.) in 2001. During his tenure at the NAIA affiliate school, Chumbley coached two All-Americans, 12 National qualifiers and a multi-event national champion.
A 1998 graduate from the University of Kentucky with a degree in kinesiology, Chumbley also helped the Wildcats' program under the direction head coach John Kenneson.
Chumbley was an All-Conference performer in the Hammer Throw while at Marshall University and a three-time Kentucky High School State Champion.
In addition to his coaching experience at the collegiate level, Chumbley brings a wealth of knowledge from the King of the Ring Throws Festival, Redbird Track and Field Camp, Urbana Coaches Clinic, Central Illinois Track Club and the Chumbley/Fister Throws Camp.
Chumbley also spent time as a volunteer coach at Georgetown College (1999) and was in participation with the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.
He and his wife Jennifer currently reside in Radford with their daughter, Alex.
