Highlanders Have A Strong Showing at ETSU Classic

JOHNSON CITY, TENN. – The Radford women's tennis team played at the ETSU Fall Classic this weekend with three highlanders reaching the finals in their respective brackets.
Freshmen Petra Dajevic (Zagreb, Croatia) and Mia Drobnjak (Zagreb, Croatia) finished second and third in the top flight of the ETSU Fall Classic this past weekend. Dajevic defeated her first two opponents 7-5, 6-1 and 6-3, 7-5 before losing the next match in three-sets to the reigning Atlantic Sun Player-of-the Year, Anna Novo of USC Upstate. Drobnjak won her first match over Appalachian State's Olivia Stannard but lost her second match to Novo of USC Upstate. She then defeated Andra Voinea of ETSU 7-5, 4-6 and 10-4 to capture third.
Ivana Tomiac (Zagreb, Croatia) and Emerald Lauzon (Bristol, Va.) reached the semifinals also. Tomiac reached the semifinals of the blue bracket by defeating Inderherberger of Lincoln Memorial and Leslie Smith of UNC Asheville. Tomiac fell to Emilia Milanovic of USC Upstate in three-sets. Lauzon advanced to the semifinals of the purple bracket with wins over Melaine Smith of Lincoln Memorial and Carolina Crowe of Tusculum. In the finals, she fell is straight sets to Appalachian State's Caroline Mauch, 6-2, 6-3.
In other singles action, Mirna Matic (Umag, Croatia) went 1-2 to finish fourth in the pink bracket. Antoinetta Iosue (Damascus, Md.) also finished 1-2 and placed fifth in the brown bracket. Ally Spector (Laurel, Md.) finished with a 2-1 record and a third place finish in the purple bracket while Christina Hammond (Charles Town, W.Va.) finished with a 1-2 record and a fourth place finish in the orange bracket.

n doubles, the Highlanders wrapped up third and fifth place in the top doubles flight. The team of Tomiac and Matic beat Western Carolina 8-4 to finish third while Dajevic and Drobnjak battled back after the first round loss to win their next two matches and finish fifth. Iosue and Spector finished with a 2-1 record and a third place while Lauzon and Hammond bounced back from an opening round defeat to finish in fifth with a 2-1 record.
The women head to Farmville, Va. this weekend for the Longwood Fall Tournament.
