RADFORD, Va. – Radford softball coach Mickey Dean has announced that 2008 Australian Softball Junior Athlete of the Year, Leigh Godfrey, has joined the Highlanders and will compete in the upcoming 2009 campaign.
Godfrey earned this prestigious honor after a very successful 2008 campaign. The native of Perth, represented her state of Western Australia (WA) in the Open Women's, U 23's, U 19's and Women's National League teams. During the U 19's National Championships, she batted .529 helping WA to the final.
“Leigh has played at a top level for some time now with her experience in the national team program of Australia,” commented Dean. “She brings both speed and power to our offense and defense. I believe her experience of international play will add depth to the knowledge of the game for our program.”
Following that performance, Godfrey was invited to the Olympic training camp last February and made her Australian Open women's team debut at the 2008 International Challenge Series in Sydney.
Prior to her debut, Godfrey excelled at every level of her state's and country's national team programs. She has earned several MVP honors, including the 2005 U16 National Championships MVP.
Godrey prepped at Seton Catholic College and was named the school's 2004 and 2005 Athletics Champion Girl. A member of the swimming and Australian Rules football (AFL) teams, she garnered AFL MVP honors in 2006.
Radford, coming off a 46-15 mark in 2008, opens the season on Wednesday, Feb. 18 when it hosts No. 20 and 2008 Women's College World Series participant Virginia Tech in a single game at 2 p.m.
