RADFORD, Va. – Radford University's soccer programs were recently recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) as one of 97 institutions, nationwide, to have both its men's and women's teams earn the organization's team academic award.
To achieve the honor, a team has to post a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Radford was one of two Big South institutions and the only school in Virginia to have both its men's and women's teams recognized.

All collegiate programs, at all levels, were considered for NSCAA team honors.
For the men's program, it was the third consecutive season that the Highlanders were recognized by the NSCAA, the only team in the Big South to achieve that standard. Radford's team GPA was 3.24, the eighth-highest in Division I.
“This a great accomplishment for our players and program,” men's head coach Spencer Smith said. “It is nice to see that we continue to put forth the effort in the classroom. This is an excellent group of young men who have worked hard for this award while displaying the true meaning of student-athlete.”
Radford's women's program posted a collective
GPA of 3.31, its first-ever NSCAA team academic honor. The Highlanders were one of just two Big South squads to perform at a 3.30 level or better.
“We stress the importance of academics frequently, so it's nice to have the team rewarded as a whole,” women's head coach Ben Sohrabi said. “It is tough to balance school, soccer and social responsibilities, and this award signifies our players have their priorities correct. In addition, I think it shows that Radford athletics have a great support system for athletes.”
