Men's Basketball Edges Winthrop 59-55 for Sixth Straight Road Win
2/2/2009 10:06:13 PM | Men's Basketball
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Chris McEachin (Norfolk, Va./Norview) scored a career-high 19 points and Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) recorded his 11th double-double of the season to lead Radford to a 59-55 victory over Winthrop in Big South men's basketball action Monday evening at the Winthrop Coliseum.
“This was a gutsy win,” commented Radford head coach Brad Greenberg. “Chris McEachin was courageous, confident and had a career night.”
McEachin finished the evening 8-for-10 from the field en route to his fifth straight double-digit contest off the bench and seventh in the last eight games. To go along with 15 points, Parakhouski, who entered tied for 12th nationally in rebounds per game, pulled down a game-high 17 boards. Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) was the third Highlander in double figures with 16 points, 12 of which came after intermission. Though he only scored six points, Amir Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley) handed out eight assists and only committed one turnover in 40 minutes of action.
“Art's 13 defensive rebounds were essential. Winthrop did a great job on the offensive glass and we needed him to finish strong defensively, without that we don't win.”
After a pair of Charles Corbin free throws cut the Eagles' deficit to 57-55 with just 47 seconds remaining, McEachin banked in a running layup from the right side with 14 ticks left to give Radford (12-10, 9-2) its eighth triumph in the last nine outings.
The Highlanders pushed the margin to 35-28 on a Lynch-Flohr jumper 2:06 into the second half, but Winthrop (6-15, 5-6) responded with a 13-3 spurt to grab its first lead of the evening. Radford wasted little time pushing the game back in its favor as it answered with an 8-3 run of its own to go up 47-43 at the 7:29 mark.
Radford shot 41.5 percent (22-53) from the floor, while holding the Eagles to just 23-of-77 (29.9 percent), including a 1-for-20 showing from deep.
“We defended them well, and forced them to miss, but they often got second and third shots which led to buckets. Our team needs to be more efficient finishing defensive possessions," said Greenberg.
Highlighted by seven early points from Parakhouski, Radford raced out to a 13-4 lead and stretched it to as many as 13 (23-10) before heading to the half with a 31-25 advantage.
Radford, which held the Eagles to just 25.6 percent (11-43) in the opening 20 minutes of action, was led by Parakhouski and McEachin, who scored 10 points each in the frame.
Despite its shooting woes in the first half, Winthrop committed just two turnovers in the period and attempted 16 more shots than the Highlanders thanks to 12 offensive rebounds that led to 10 second chance points.
Corbin led the Eagles with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Cameron Stanley added 12 points.
Radford will enjoy a four-day break before returning to the Dedmon Center Saturday evening for a 7 p.m. tip against Presbyterian.
NOTES: The Highlanders are off to their best start in Big South play since recording a 12-2 conference mark during the 2000-01 season… Radford's six-game conference road winning streak is the longest in school history… Prior to tonight, each of Radford's victories were decided by double figures… The last time the Highlanders won at the Winthrop Coliseum was Feb. 9, 2002… With VMI's setback against UNC Asheville, Radford moves into first place a half game ahead of the Keydets in the Big South standings.
