Radford Records A Program First Third Straight Shutout to Start Season

RADFORD, Va. – Radford scored three goals in each half, two courtesy of Kay Tufts, as the Highlanders thumped Siena, 6-0, in their home opener Wednesday afternoon from RU Hockey Field.

Radford (3-0), behind five saves from #Jennifer Wisniewski, posted its third straight shutout to start the season, a program first. It also marks the first 3-0 start since 1996.

It was Tufts' first collegiate multi-goal game as she was joined on the scoring front by Megan Lenhardt, Caroline Hollerbach, Marlee Schramm and Alexis Knorr. It was Hollerbach's and Knorr's first collegiate tallies.

Schramm and classmate Madonna Wadolowski each dished out a pair of assists against the Saints (0-3).

After a slow start, Lenhardt got the ball rolling for the Highlanders, ripping a shot inside the near post during Radford's third corner of the game.

Tufts made it 2-0 10 minutes later off a feed from Wadolowski.

Hollerbach netted her goal in the 30th minute, tipping a long bouncing cross from Wadolowski into the back of the cage for the Highlanders' third goal of the contest.

Radford scored two goals 1:14 apart to push its lead to 5-0 in the second half.

Tufts, standing on the doorstep, scored again in the 44th minute knocking down Schramm's shot and poking it into the wide open cage. Schramm, who also assisted on Lenhardt's goal, added score number five on a corner at 44:31.

Knorr closed out the scoring with a nice goal in the 69th minute, roofing the ball over Siena keeper Alison Baillargeon. Baillargeon, who entered at the start of the second stanza, finished with six saves.

Junior Lynsey Daughtrey and Ellie Staples tallied helpers on the final two goals, respectively. It was Staples first collegiate assist and point.

Wisniewski preserved her third shutout of the season with four second half saves, including a pair during a late Siena flurry in the 65th minute.

Radford finished the contest outshooting Siena 26-10 and holding a 19-3 advantage in corners. Beth Myers, who played the first half in goal for the Saints, made five saves.

The Highlanders begin a five-game stretch away from home on Sunday, Sep. 5 facing off at William & Mary at 2 p.m.
