RADFORD, Va. – Highlighted by a second place finish in the 400 medley relay and season bests by all four relay teams, Radford swimming and diving sits in second place after day one of the Highlander Invitational, Thursday evening from the Dedmon Center Natatorium.
Along with the relays the host Highlanders posted season and personal bests in the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free.
In the final relay of the evening session, the squad of juniors Jessica Frazelle and Haley Schweitzer, freshman Sarah Fredericksen and senior Emily Turner churned out a time of 4:01.45 edging Millersville by .07 seconds.
Radford's other IM squad turned in a mark of 4:04.18, which consisted of freshmen Mary Flinn and Jordan Jessee, sophomore Claire Doherty and junior Meaghan Rowley.
The 200 free relay squads opened the finals session with fifth (1:40.42) and seventh place (1:42.70) finishes.
Fredericksen and Flinn finished fourth and sixth (5:15.65) in the 500 free. Fredericksen lowered her personal best to 5:09.14, while Flinn earned her personal best of 5:12.00 in the prelims. Their times are second and third best times on the program's top-10 list.
In the 200 IM final, Turner (2:12.52), Frazelle (2:12.69) and Schweitzer (2:17.45) touched the wall in fourth, fifth and eighth, respectively. Turner and Frazelle's were season-bests, while Schweitzer posted hers in the prelims (2:15.46).
On the one-meter board, the Highlanders competed against each other with junior Skye Hickling posting a score of 234.15, junior Alex Poletti charting 219.25 points and freshman Kelsey Parshall rounding out the scores with a personal best 158.85 points.
In the 50 free, freshman Yvonne Smith and Rowley each posted personal bests and top-10 times. Smith in the consolation final (25.28) and Rowley in her prelim heat (25.19).
The meet resumes tomorrow with preliminaries beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the finals at 6:00 p.m. The 3-meter board competition will take place after the morning session.
