RADFORD, Va. – With five more top-five finishes and 10 more personal bests on Saturday evening, host Radford concluded a very successful Highlander Invitational with a second place showing this weekend at the Dedmon Center Natatorium.
Prior to the evening session, Radford recognized its two seniors Kathryn Ruch (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) and Emily Turner (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Technical).
On the final day of competition, the Highlanders put seven individuals in the finals and four more in the consolation heats. Freshman Mary Flinn (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) posted the top finish with a second-place showing in the 200 backstroke. Edged out in the final lap, the rookie turned in a personal-best 2:07.66 and improved on her top-10 time, moving into fourth.
Junior Jessica Frazelle (Lexington, N.C./West Davidson) followed her with a fifth (2:09.57) and junior Meaghan Rowley (Smithfield, Va./Smithfield) was seventh (2:14.00).
In the 200 butterfly, freshman Sarah Fredericksen (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) charted a third-place time (2:10.66) in the final and posted a personal best and improved on her No. 3 top-10 time with a 2:08.43 in the prelims. Sophomore Claire Doherty (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) touched the wall in fifth with a time of 2:13.64.
Fredericksen also placed seventh in 1650 freestyle (17:52.21) and was the second Highlander to break the 18-minute mark, while Frazelle finished eighth in the 100 free (55.25) after sprinting to her personal best in the preliminary (55.13).
The Highlanders concluded with a fifth (3:38.58) and sixth (3:42.56) in the 400 free relay.
Junior Haley Schweitzer (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) and freshman Jordan Jessee (Norton, Va./John I. Burton) went one and two in the consolation breaststroke heat. Jessee posted a personal best in the process.
The Highlanders will compete in their final meet before the New Year on Dec. 1 first at James Madison.
