ATHENS, Ga. – Following the first day, Radford sits in ninth place at the 2013 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships held at the University of Georgia's Gabrielson Natatorium.
Four Highlanders set personal bests and two more turned in season-best times on day one. Senior Emily Turner churned out a 24.97 in the lead leg of the 200 freestyle relay, surpassing her old personal best set during her freshman campaign. The mark matches Dixie Mitchell for the second fastest time in program history as she becomes the third Highlander to break the 25-second barrier. The relay squad consisting of Turner, Jessica Frazelle, Meaghan Rowley and Mary Flinn finished 11th. Turner also added a season-best time of 2:10.43 in the 200 IM prelims.
Junior Skye Hickling was the highest finisher amongst Radford's divers, placing 10th in the preliminaries with a score of 225.00.
Jessica Baker, leading off the “B” 200 freestyle relay with a 26.56, along with sophomore Claire Doherty and freshman Reagan Padgett in the 50 freestyle prelims also turned in new top times (25.78/28.39). Junior Sydney Sweetwas the other Highlander earning a season-best, clocking a 5:50.43 in the 500 freestyle
The evening was capped off with the 400 medley relay team, consisting of Frazelle junior Haley Schweitzer, freshman Sarah Fredericksen and Turner, posting a ninth place finish with a season-best time of 4:00.04.
Day two of the Championships resume tomorrow with preliminary heats at 10:00 a.m.
