ORLANDO, Fla. – The Radford women's tennis team kicked off its spring break trip to the Sunshine State in convincing fashion as the Highlanders posted a 7-0 shutout over Wesleyan Tuesday evening at the Oak Street Tennis Center.
RU (2-7) wasted little time jumping on top, sweeping all three doubles matches to earn the 1-0 edge heading into singles play. Taylor Newman and Meg Napolitano improved to 3-6 on the season after snatching an 8-1 triumph on court one against Genevieve Aniello and Clare DuBrin.
Winning their first match in doubles together were Allison Michael and Hana Babic, taking care of Grace Smith and Lauren Jacobs at the second flight, 8-0. Their victory also clinched the doubles point for the Highlanders.
For the first time this season, Radford swept all six singles matches. Finishing first was Gemma Valls, who won her fourth match in a row by downing Aniello (6-0, 6-1) at the top position. The Highlanders went up 3-0 when Newman recorded her second victory of the season at No. 2 singles. She defeated Kiley Robbins in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).
Clinching the dual for RU was Napolitano, who took a victory lap for the fourth straight outing. The sophomore defeated Jacobs (7-5, 6-2) in the fourth slot.
The freshman trio of Taylor Fay, Michael and Babic made it a clean sweep when they each tallied straight-set decisions on courts five, six and three, respectively.
The Highlanders will be back in action Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. when they face Augustana (S.D.). The Vikings are ranked No. 5 in the Central Region of Division II according to the ITA.
