RADFORD SNAPS STREAK WITH 5-4 WIN OVER RED STORM

BOX SCORE RADFORD, Va. - Josh Reavis delivered a bases-clearing double, highlighting a five-run second inning as Radford baseball held off St. John's, 5-4, Saturday afternoon to even the series at one game apiece.

Redshirt freshman Zach Woolcock led off the bottom of the second with a triple to the alley in right center, his first collegiate triple.  Woolcock was brought home by Ryan Burgess on the next at-bat to plate the game's first run.  All with two outs, Radford tallied four runs to jump ahead, 5-0.

The Highlanders strung together four consecutive singles that led to the second run and Reavis delivered his three-RBI double to deep right field, which proved to be the difference.

Seven players recorded a hit for Radford (6-6).  Jimmy Brennan went 2-for-3 and Frank Schwindle went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored for St. John's (2-11).

Left-handed starter Michael Boyle (2-1) picked up the win for the Highlanders in six innings of work and struck out five.  Sean Hagan took the loss for the Red Storm in seven innings on the mound.

After falling behind early, St. John's got three runs back in the top of the third.  Sean O'Hare brought home Pat Talbut on a double that just dropped inside the left field line. Radford turned a double play, but O'Hare crossed the plate and the Red Storm got one more to cap the top half.

Schwindle chipped into the lead with his solo blast to left field, bringing the Red Storm within one, 5-4 in the eighth inning, but reliever Jeff Maxwell and the Highlander defense settled in to snap a five-game skid.

The Highlanders conclude the series Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
