HIGHLANDERS FALL 1-0 IN BIG SOUTH FINAL

|

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Radford's bid to follow up its regular season Big South championship with a tournament title came up one goal short Sunday as Coastal Carolina (15-4-1) defeated the Highlanders (12-5-3), 1-0 in the title game at Bryan Park. Sergio Camargo scored the game's lone goal in the 51st minute. A flurry of offensive chances for RU in the closing minutes of the game did not yield an equalizing goal.

"There is certainly no shame in losing to a team like Coastal," Radford head coach Marc Reeves said. "They are a phenomenal team that is set up to represent our league with a good run in the NCAA Tournament. We are tremendously proud of our guys. The last 30 minutes we were unlucky not to put one home and possibly have the momentum in overtime and walk away with the championship."

The Radford offense produced eight shots and eight corner opportunities, all in the second half, but could not find the back of the net. The Highlanders forced a pair of saves by the Coastal keeper and had a handful of combinations that came up incomplete to find a goal.

Ironically, Coastal's goal came after a Radford offensive push that resulted in three straight corners, but the Chanticleers took the lead for good on a counter break that resulted in Camargo beating Radford keeper Aitor Pouseu Blanco to the upper left corner of the goal. Shawn McLaws was credited with an assist on the play.

Much like the semifinal, which Radford advanced from in penalty kicks, Pouseu Blanco was stellar between the pipes making four saves on the day. He faced 12 CCU shots in all with five on frame. Chel Ho Park Kim and Krzysztof Nalborski each charted a pair of shots for the Highlanders. Dario Redondo and Jamie Summers also put shots on goal for RU.

"This program, with a regular season championship and only five losses with one in the championship match and three of them being to top 15 RPI programs on the season, we have taken a huge step forward," Reeves said. "We are grateful to our seniors. They are going to be missed, and now we go to the off-season to recruit and work hard to improve. The steps forward made this season by these players, coaches, and support staff are definitely worth being proud of."

Pouseu Blanco, Felix Steinhauser, and Jo Vetle Rimstad were named to the all-tournament team.
