Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DUKES SLIP BY HIGHLANDERS 74-71

|

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Ron Curry's three-pointer with 3.3 seconds remaining provided the winning margin as James Madison (1-1) defeated Radford (0-2), 74-71 on Monday at the JMU Convocation Center. The Highlanders had one last shot to tie the game, but R.J. Price's 25-footer did not fall, and the Dukes slipped away with the victory despite another double-double from Javonte Green.

Green and Rashun Davis each scored 15 points to lead four Highlanders in double figures. Price added 11 and Kyle Noreen 10, but it was Curry who led all scorer's with 20, including the game-winner. Jackson Kent added 12, along with Paulius Satkus (11) and Winston Grays (10) in double figures for the Dukes.

"This was a very good college basketball game, well played in a lot of area by both teams," Radford head coach Mike Jones said. "I thought our guys didn't wilt on the road when things got tough. You have to credit JMU. They hit tough shots, including the final shot of the game."

Radford opened the game on a 10-2 run forcing three turnovers into steals and easy points on the offensive end. But the Dukes methodically worked their way back into the game when RU went cold from the field. With the game tied at 35 and RU with the ball and the clock running down, Kion Brown's attempt to give the Highlanders the lead at the half was blocked and left Curry enough time to hit a running three-pointer at the buzzer to give JMU at 38-35 lead at the break.

RU overcame the largest lead of the night for JMU at seven points, 58-51, with 10:37 to play. Davis accounted for 12 straight points for the Highlanders, scoring 10 and assisting on a Noreen layup to help bring Radford back to within striking distance. His three-pointer with 4:03 to play gave RU a 68-67 lead, and the game was back-and-forth the rest of the way leading up to Curry's second last-second make of the night.

Price dished out five assists and Davis four as RU had 17 dimes on 25 made field goals. Radford won the battle on the boards 35-33, including 14 offensive caroms that led to a 15-7 advantage in second-chance points.

Radford comes off the road for its home opener Thursday against Howard inside the Dedmon Center. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
