EAGLES SPOIL SENIOR NIGHT, HIGHLANDERS STILL EARN BIG SOUTH CROWN

|

RADFORD, Va. - On a night when Winthrop (12-4-1, 6-2-1) left Cupp Stadium with a 1-0 upset of the Radford (11-4-2, 8-1-0) men's soccer team, the silver lining came an hour later when High Point and Coastal Carolina finished in a draw and RU posted the outright Big South title following the regular season finale Wednesday for the Highlanders.

Radford and Winthrop played a game controlled in the midfield for the better portion of the 90 minutes, and it was a defensive communication miscue which led the the game-winning goal for the Eagles. Radford defender Daniel O'Keefe and goalkeeper Aitor Pouseu Blanco misplayed a ball inside the 6-yard box, and Winthrop's Max Hasenstab took advantage with a steal and goal in the 61st minute for the game's lone tally. The goal was Hasenstab's ninth of the season.

"We knew this was always going to be a tough game because Winthrop is an exceptionally talented group and always up for big games," Radford head coach Marc Reeves said. "Their position in the league and home quarterfinal was at stake, and we just did not play well enough and prepare well enough for tonight. We were a little bit happy from the Coastal win and securing the No. 1 seed. That starts with me in ensuring that we are little bit more together."

Neither the Eagles or the Highlanders were able to sustain much momentum throughout the contest. WU outshot RU 6-4, but just 2-1 in shots on goal. Winthrop held the edge in corner kicks, but just 2-1. Fabian Broich recorded the clean sheet in goal for the Eagles.

"The good news is this doesn't end our season," Reeves said. "It makes it tougher, but it doesn't end it. We need to be back Tuesday with whomever our opponent is to respect it and prepare correctly."

The Highlanders will play host as the top seed in the Big South Tournament to either Campbell or UNC Asheville on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 6:00 p.m. Campbell and Asheville play each other Saturday in the regular season finale for both teams. With an Asheville win or tie, RU will face Campbell. With a win by the Camels, the Highlanders draw UNC Asheville in the quarterfinals.
