FARMVILLE, Va. – Behind four double-figure scorers and 53.1 percent shooting, Longwood held on down the stretch for a 76-70 Big South women's basketball victory over Radford Saturday afternoon at Willett Hall.
Not to be outdone, the Highlanders (7-20, 5-13 Big South) shot 50 percent themselves and only committed 11 turnovers. However, the Lancers (8-20, 5-14 Big South) shot just a touch better and won the battle of the boards, 33-23.
Each time Radford made a charge, the hosts were able to knock down a timely shot, including some 3-pointers late in the second half. The Lancers connected on 53.3 percent (8-15) of their attempts from long range. They also made the most of their trips to the charity stripe, converting 88.9 percent (16-18).
For the first time this season, two Highlanders charted 20-plus points in the same game. Despite battling through double teams most of the game, Rachael Ross notched a career-high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting.
Ayana Avery drained four 3-pointers en route to 20 points and a career-high-tying four steals. It was the seventh time this season the junior reached the 20-point plateau. Aisha Foy finished in double figures for the fourth straight game with 14 points, while tying her career high in assists (six) and steals (four).
Raven Williams led all Lancers with 18 points. Kyndal Skersick (17) Khalilah Ali (16) and Deborah Headen (13) also tallied double digits. Ali pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
Radford concludes its final week of the regular season at home beginning with Thursday's in-state battle with Liberty. The Lady Flames defeated RU, 70-49, in the two sides' first encounter on Dec. 7, 2013. Round two of the season series is set for a 7 p.m. start at the Dedmon Center.
