RADFORD STEALS ITS WAY PAST HIGH POINT, WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT

|

RADFORD, Va. - Radford's defense recorded 10 steals and forced 14 turnovers converting those into a 19-10 edge in points as the Highlanders thrilled a raucous home crowd at the Dedmon Center on Thursday with a 73-66 victory over Big South-leading High Point. With their fourth consecutive win, the Highlanders move to within a game of first place behind a now five-way tie in the league standings after Thursday's results.

Javonte Green's 31st career double-double came in the form of 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. He added three steals and a pair of assists in a matchup of two of the conference's most dynamic players. HPU's John Brown, the reigning Big South Player of the Year, scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead all scorers.

Green led four Radford players in double figures. YaYa Anderson also had 15, and R.J. Price and Brandon Holcomb each had 14 for RU. Holcomb's 14 tied a career high. Jalen Carethers added six points and six rebounds off the bench, and it was his steal at midcourt with under a minute to play and game still in the balance that secured the game defensively for the Highlanders.

Radford head coach Mike Jones knew following the game that this was a battle between two of the league's better teams.

"They're good," Jones said of the Panthers succinctly to begin his postgame press conference. "They are a good team. They've got the best player in the league, no doubt about it."

As a team, however, Radford had an answer on this night. The Highlanders shot over 50 percent from the field (50.9 on 27-53) for the fifth straight game and outscored the Panthers 36-28 in the paint.

"We made Brown work and did a great job of not letting their other guys go off," Jones said. "This game wasn't going to be about offense. Tonight it was important for us to make it difficult for them to score."

The Highlanders held HPU to 30 points in the second half and allowed Brown just two points in the final eight minutes of the game, turning a 59-58 lead with 8:01 to play into as much as an eight-point edge with :19 remaining. RU used a 7-0 run over from the six-minute mark to the final minute of play to secure the game. Holcomb's emphatic dunk at the 2:11 mark gave RU a 66-61 lead, and Anderson put the game out of reach with a layup to make it 68-61 with a minute left.

With the win, RU improves to 13-7, 4-3. High Point falls to 14-5, 5-2. Radford hosts Liberty on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
