VCU DOWNS RADFORD BEHIND HOT 3-POINT SHOOTING

GAME INFORMATION
  • Score: VCU 92, Radford 74
  • Records: Radford (1-1) | VCU (2-0)
  • Location: Stuart C. Siegel Center | Richmond, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Radford was unable to duplicate its season-opening win on the road, as hot-shooting VCU broke open a tight game midway through en route to a 92-74 victory Monday night.
  • The game was tied at 30 before the Rams used a 19-2 run spanning the end of the first half and start of the second to open up a double-digit cushion. The Highlanders got no closer than 13 the rest of the way.
  • VCU did much of its damage from beyond the arc, hitting 54 percent (13-24) of its 3-pointers, while the Highlanders finished 7 of 19—accounting for the 18-point differential.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Rashun Davis overcame a slow start to finish with a team-high 18 points, while setting a career high with 10 assists. He had previously recorded eight on five occasions. Davis was 3 of 7 from the field, but made 12 of 13 free throws, while also grabbing five rebounds.
  • Cameron Jones added 12 points, while freshman Christian Lutete posted his first double-digit scoring effort with 11 points. Lutete was 4 for 4 from the field, including 3 for 3 on 3-pointers.
  • Justin Cousin scored a career-best nine points, including six in the first half. Freshman Ed Polite, Jr. grabbed a game-high six rebounds, while adding eight points.
  • Senior guard Melvin Johnson led the VCU 3-point assault, hitting 6 of 10 to chalk up a game-high 24 points. Johnson entered the season with 86 career treys and had three in the Rams' season opener. He hit a pair from downtown to start the second half, boosting the lead to 19.
  • Radford got 30 points off its bench, but VCU countered with 38, including 15 from Korey Billbury and 12 by Michael Gilmore. Gilmore, who averaged just two points last year as a freshman, was 4 for 4 from the field, including a pair of treys.
  • VCU's pressure defense forced Radford into 20 turnovers and the Rams capitalized for 25 points.
  • The Highlanders shot just 38 percent in the first half, but stayed close thanks to an 8 for 9 effort at the line and 10 points off turnovers.
  • Lutete's first 3-pointer evened the game at 30, before VCU scored 13 of the last 15 points over the final 4:46 of the first half to take control.
  • Brandon Holcomb recorded one block to tie former Radford All-American Art Parakhouski for fourth all-time in program history with 115 career blocks.

QUOTABLE
  • "The game got away from us certainly at the end of the first half. I thought the guys came out with the right focus, and they handled themselves for about 16 or 17 minutes and then just a little bit of a crack in the armor at the end of the first half really hurt. Coming out of the locker room, I thought we played a little individual, maybe trying to get it all back in one or two possessions, and when you do that in this environment against a team that's as well-coached and hard-playing as they are, they're going to run away from you. I'm proud of the guys for continuing to fight right down to the end. That's who we are and that's who we're going to be." ~ Radford head coach Mike Jones

UP NEXT
