RADFORD DROPS 76-62 DECISION TO SIENA

GAME INFORMATION
  • Score: Siena 76, Radford 62
  • Records: Radford (2-2) | Siena (1-2)
  • Location: Chace Athletic Center | Smithfield, R.I.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite another productive outing from its bench, the Radford men's basketball team could not overcome a poor shooting game in a 76-62 loss to Siena Friday afternoon in 2K Classic play at Bryant University.
  • The Highlanders shot just 31 percent in the first half and finished at 37 percent for the second straight game.
  • Siena closed the first half on an 8-1 run and scored the first nine points of the second half to quickly build a 16-point lead.
  • RU tried to mount a comeback behind Ed Polite, Jr., and Darius Bolstad, who combined for 24 points, including 19 in the final 20 minutes.
  • However, Siena shot 65 percent in the second stanza to keep the Highlanders from getting any closer than seven the remainder of the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Polite, Jr. posted third career-best scoring game in a row, tallying 13 points, to go along with five rebounds, tied for team-high honors.
  • Bolstad recorded his first career double-digit scoring effort with 11 points. He was 3 for 3 from the field and added three rebounds.
  • As a team, Radford's bench bettered its strong performance in Wednesday's win over Catawba, totaling 40 points in this game.
  • However, the Highlanders struggled from the perimeter against a combination of Siena zone defenses, making just 2 of 16 3-point attempts.
  • Siena also had a rough shooting first half at just 28 percent, but dominated the rebounding battle 30-18, including 14 offensive rebounds for 11 second-chance points. For the game, the Saints had a 45-31 advantage on the glass.
  • A total of 10 different Highlanders scratched the scoring column in the first half. Cameron Jones became the 11th with a putback basket midway through the second half. However, he finished just 3 of 11 from the field.
  • Leading scorer Rashun Davis had just two field-goal attempts and two points. He did record a game-high seven assists.
  • Taj Owens chipped in eight points, while Brandon Holcomb had seven and tied for a team-best with five rebounds.
  • Freshman Caleb Tanner hit a 3-pointer for his first career points that tied the game at 23, before Siena's half-ending spurt.
  • The 24 points in the first stanza was Radford's lowest output in a half since the Georgetown game last season (Dec. 13, 2014), when it had 18 in the opening 20 minutes.
  • Siena leading scorer Marquis Wright led four Saints in double figures with 21 points. The Saints' starting five combined for 59 of the team's points.

QUOTABLE
  • "Siena's a good team. I think they are going to be a team that has a chance to win their conference. They're very well-coached and very disciplined. They have a very specific style of play and play a lot of zone, even though they are pretty athletic and I think that helps them in the zone. They made it tough for us to get the kind of looks we wanted to get. But I thought the key to the game was rebounding. We thought coming that whoever won the rebounding war was going to win the game and those guys came right out of the gate and established themselves on the glass and I thought that set the tone for the rest of the game " ~ Radford head coach Mike Jones
