RADFORD, Va. – Radford will honor the No. 20 jersey of former men's basketball standout Doug Day prior to the 7 p.m. tipoff between the Highlanders and Virginia Tech on Dec. 9 inside the Dedmon Center.
Day's No. 20 will be the first Radford men's basketball jersey honored in the rafters of the Highlanders' home court. He will become just the third Radford student-athlete to have their jersey recognized in this fashion, joining Dante Washington (men's soccer) and Stephanie Howard (women's basketball).
"December 9 will be a great moment in Radford basketball history when we honor Doug Day's No. 20 jersey," Director of Athletics Robert Lineburg expressed. "We are extremely thrilled to honor Doug and his family in what is one of the greatest honors a former student-athlete can receive."
Day, who grew up in nearby Blacksburg, completed his four seasons (1989-93) with the Highlanders as the NCAA Division I career leader in 3-pointers made. His 401 career 3-pointers made still rank 12th all-time in NCAA Division I men's basketball history.
"Radford University and Coach Oliver Purnell gave me an opportunity to make my dreams come true," Day reminisced. "I was able to receive an outstanding education and play a sport I loved, all while being close to my family. I was blessed to be surrounded and mentored by great professors, coaches and teammates during my years at Radford University."
Radford's all-time leading scorer with 2,027 career points, Day ranks eighth all-time in career scoring among Big South Conference men's basketball players. He averaged 17.3 points per game for his career en route to All-Big South honors each of his four seasons at RU.
The 6-foot-1 sharpshooter also set the Radford single-game scoring record of 43 points against Central Connecticut State on Dec. 12, 1990.
Day propelled the Highlanders to new heights during his sophomore and junior campaigns, as Radford earned back-to-back 20-win seasons in 1990-91 and 1991-92. Behind his offensive prowess, Day guided the Highlanders to their first Big South regular-season championship in 1991-92.
The Blacksburg, Va., native was inducted into the Radford Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Big South Conference Hall of Fame in 2005.
Day, who graduated from Radford with a bachelor's degree in education in 1994, has continued to make the New River Valley his home. After beginning his coaching career as an assistant at Northside High School in Roanoke, Va., Day assumed the same role at his high school alma mater. Day served as Blacksburg's assistant coach until 2002, before he was elevated to head coach of the boys' basketball program—a position he still holds today.
"Coaching basketball and working with students have always been goals of mine, and to be able to accomplish these goals at my alma mater with my father as an assistant coach for three years was extra special," Day acknowledged. "In my coaching career, I have been very fortunate to work with some outstanding coaches and student-athletes."
The jersey retirement ceremony will be held prior to tipoff of the Radford-Virginia Tech game on Dec. 9. To ensure your spot for the ceremony and game, season tickets are available online or by calling the Radford Athletics Ticket Office at 540-831-7889.
