HOKIES HOLD OFF RADFORD; ANDERSON JOINS 1,000-POINT CLUB

GAME INFORMATION
  • Score: Virginia Tech 74, Radford 65,
  • Records: Radford (5-5) | Virginia Tech (6-3)
  • Location: Dedmon Center | Radford, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior YaYa Anderson became the 29th Highlander to score 1,000 points, but Virginia Tech stormed out to a big lead and held off Radford's second-half comeback to take a 74-65 victory Wednesday night in front of an over-capacity crowd of 4,013 at the Dedmon Center.
  • The Hokies started the game on fire, hitting 12 of their first 14 attempts to build a 28-8 lead less than 10 minutes into the game.
  • Radford attempted to cut away at the deficit several times, but still trailed 57-39 with just over eight minutes to play.
  • The Highlanders then put together a 17-5 spurt to get within six. Brandon Holcomb and Taj Owens each had four points in the run, and Cameron Jones capped it with a 3-pointer and a layup that made it 62-56 with 2:47 to go.
  • However, Virginia Tech scored seven of the next eight points to create enough separation to hold on for the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Holcomb scored 11 of his season-high 13 points in the second half and was 5 of 6 shooting in the game. He grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds for his third career double-double. The senior also recorded his 124th career blocked shot, tying Eric Parker for third place on the program's all-time list.
  • Jones led four Highlanders in double figures with 16 points on 6 of 13 shooting, including 3 of 6 from behind the arc.
  • Kion Brown made five of his eight shots and tallied a season-best 12 points.
  • Anderson became the fourth RU player in four years to reach the scoring milestone when he converted a fast-break layup at the 8:55 mark of the first half. He finished with six points and now has 1,005 for his career.
  • The Highlanders again could not overcome poor shooting in the opening 20 minutes, shooting less than 35 percent for the fourth consecutive outing. They rebounded to make 15 of 31 attempts in the second half and finish at 42 percent for the game, but were just 3 of 20 from 3-point range.
  • Led by Holcomb, the Highlanders stayed in it by winning the rebounding battle 39-33, including 14 on the offensive end—leading to a 17-4 advantage in second-chance points.
  • Ed Polite, Jr. and Christian Lutete each contributed five boards, while Anderson had four and two others had three. The Hokies came into the game outrebounding their opponents by over 11 per game.
  • Leading scorer Rashun Davis was held to single digits for the second straight game. He again led the team in assists with four.
  • Tech cooled off from the field late in the first half to finish at 52 percent and was 28 of 56 for the game. The Hokies made just three 3-pointers in the game, but they all came in the first 10 minutes.
  • Seth Allen scored a game-high 17 points off the bench to lead four players in double figures for Tech. Allen was averaging 14.1 on the season.
  • The Hokies had a 33-20 edge in bench points, just the second time Radford's reserves have been outscored in eight games.
  • Virginia Tech improved to 7-2 in the all-time series in its first matchup against RU inside the Dedmon Center. The teams will play for a fourth straight season next year in Blacksburg.
  • Radford suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season and fell to 4-2 in its last six games against major conference opponents.

QUOTABLE
  • "Virginia Tech is a much different team than they were last year. Coach (Buzz) Williams has done a tremendous job of bringing in players that fit the way he wants to play. They're very long and athletic and get up and down in transition. We knew that was going to be a problem. We did a good job of keeping them off the glass, but there weren't a whole lot of missed shots (by them) early. They were ready to play in their first true road game, and I thought they came out and really took it to us right from the beginning. By the time we figured it out and started to play a little bit, it was desperation time in the second half. I thought our guys continued to fight. We had a couple of chances to get it (down) to 11 or 10 just before the half. It didn't go our way, but I was really pleased with our guys' fight right to the end of the game." ~ Radford head coach Mike Jones

UP NEXT
  • Radford heads back to the nation's capital for the second time this season for a non-conference matchup at Howard on Saturday afternoon.
  • Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. inside Burr Gymnasium.
