SECOND HALF SURGE KEEPS RADFORD TIED ATOP BIG SOUTH STANDINGS

|

CLINTON, S.C. - Radford (19-8, 10-4) used a defensive swarm in the second half to turn around a seven-point halftime deficit into a 62-56 victory Saturday night at Presbyterian (9-18, 5-9) and remain tied with High Point and Charleston Southern atop the Big South standings. RU trailed 33-26 at the break, but completely smothered PC in the final 20 minutes to win its 10th in 11 games.

Scoreless for the first 30 minutes of the game, R.J. Price hit three straight baskets and scored eight of his nine points in a 45-second span to turn a four-point PC lead into a four-point Highlander advantage, RU never trailed again.

The defense in the second half was the key. Radford recorded nine second half steals and 11 in all while forcing 20 Blue Hose turnovers.

"The second half was phenomenal," Radford head coach Mike Jones said. "I didn't detect any panic in our guys at the half. We just knew we had to play with more intensity. There was really only thing to correct and that was to play with a little more sense of urgency on the defensive end. That helped speed up the tempo. We created offense with our defense."

On the offensive end, Radford turned those steals into points. Javonte Green, who led the Highlanders with 15 points and seven rebounds, helped turn the momentum with three thunderous breakaway dunks. YaYa Anderson knocked down 6-11 from the field to chip in 14 points. He set a career high with four steals. Three other Highlanders added at least eight points (Price 9, Cameron Jones 9, and Rashun Davis 8).

The win sets up a huge Big South showdown on Monday night in the Dedmon Center with defending league champion Coastal Carolina visiting. The tip is set for 8:00 p.m.
