BASEBALL STUMBLES LATE IN SERIES OPENER EN ROUTE TO DROPPING DOUBLEHEADER

AUBURN, Ala. ---- The Radford baseball team stumbled late in game one at Auburn on Saturday, falling to the Tigers 3-2 in extra innings. The Highlanders were unable to regroup in game two at Hitchcock Field, dropping the second half to the doubleheader, 6-1.

"We did not execute on the backend of game one," said head coach Joe Raccuia. "We were in the spot we wanted to be in, but didn't make enough pitches or enough plays to pull the game off. We had an opportunity to open the series with a 'W' but didn't do it. In game two, we just didn't compete. We were not good enough, and our effort was not very good. Maybe it was a shock giving up game one, but it was effort and concentration plays we didn't make."

Overall on the day, Shane Johnsonbaugh led Radford (2-3. 0-0 Big South) with four hits in nine at bats. Josh Reavis, Patrick Marshall, Trevor Riggs and Aaron Scoville all tallied a hit on the day. Riggs and Reavis represented the Red and White's RBIs against Auburn (5-2, 0-0 SEC). Michael Boyle highlighted the pitchers, going seven innings with only surrendering one run off of four hits.

The Highlanders take to the field again on Sunday, Feb. 22, for game three against the Tigers. First pitch from Hitchcock Field is slated for 1 p.m. CT/2 p.m. ET.

Johnsonbaugh led the Highlanders with two hits in four at bats and the Red and White's lone run of the contest. Reavis recorded Radford's RBI, hitting a groundout to allow Johnsonbaugh to score. Dylan Nelson went 4.1 innings in the start, giving up five runs on four hits.

Daniel Robert's two hits and one RBI led Auburn. Four different Tigers batted in runs in the second game of the day.  As a staff, Auburn combined for 13 strikeouts, 10 of which came from the starter Rocky McCord. McCord threw seven innings, surrendering two hits and one run. Izaac Yarbrough pitched two innings, giving up no hits and no runs.

The Tigers busted the contest open in the bottom of the fifth inning with four runs. The inning started for Auburn with a solo homerun over the left wall. Anfernee Grier reached on a hit-by-pitch, advanced on a groundout, and then scored on a sac bunt. Robert, who had the walk-off single in game one, tripled to left center to score the inning's third run. J.J. Shaffer batted in the Tigers' fourth run of the inning, finding a hole in left field for a single.

Radford's deficit grew to five in the sixth inning with a run scored by Ben Craft. He reached on a single to center and scored when Grier singled down the left field line.

The Highlanders continued their trend of scoring first, putting one run up in the top of the fourth. The inning started with a first-pitch double off the bat of Johnsonbaugh. He moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout from Reavis.

Auburn responded quickly, though, with a tally in the bottom of the frame. After the bases were loaded, a passed ball allowed one to score. With a strikeout and pop out already in the books, Nelson recorded his third strikeout of the day to escape the inning.

:: GAME 1 :: 10 Innings :: Auburn 3 :: Radford 2 ::

After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, Radford's bat went cold late as the Tigers scored three unanswered runs over the final four innings of play to take game one.

Riggs led the Highlanders with an RBI and 1-4 at the plate. Johnsonbaugh recorded two hits in the extra-inning effort. Marshall and Hunter Higgerson represent Radford's two runs. Boyle pitched seven innings, allowing only four hits and one run on his way to five strikeouts. Daniel Bridgeman (1-1) was given the loss after pitching two-thirds of an inning and giving up one run off one hit.

Robert and Blake Logan tallied RBIs for Auburn. Grier went 3-4 at the plate with one run to lead all hitters. Trey Winegenter started on the mound, pitching 6.2 innings and giving up five hits. Both of the Highlanders' runs came with Winegenter in the game. Dalton Rentz (1-0) was awarded the win, logging 2.1 innings of work and striking out five batters.

In the bottom of the tenth inning, Grier opened the frame for the Tigers with a single to left center. He moved to second on a sac bunt. Two walks, one intentional, loaded the bases with two out for Auburn and Robert coming to the plate. Robert came up already 1-3 with an RBI in the game and tallied a second with a walk-off single to center.

The Highlanders struck first, which they have done in every game this season, in the top of the second inning on a wild pitch from Wingenter. Marshall knocked a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a groundout before making the trip home.

The Red and White's lead extended in the top of the fourth inning with a single off the bat of Riggs to score Higgerson on third. Higgerson reached on a throwing error on a strike three in the dirt. He then stole second before Riggs found a hole in left field.

Auburn responded in the bottom of the seventh on an error by the Highlanders in centerfield. Robert hit a single to centerfield that Riggs overplayed. As the ball rolled toward the warning track, Shaffer rounded third and home. A flyout by Logan ended the inning with Radford leading 2-1.

The Tigers knotted the game in the bottom of the ninth after striking out four consecutive Highlanders. Ryan Meisinger, in for relief, hit Schaffer on a full count to start the inning. A single and a sac bunt moved Schaffer to third for a deep sac fly by Logan to score the runner.
