GREEN REACHES 1,000 REBOUNDS; RU POSTS RARE WIN AT UNCA

|

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Javonte Green became just the third Big South player in history to reach 1,000 career rebounds with his 32nd double-double, and YaYa Anderson poured in 22 points, including six three-pointers as Radford (20-9, 11-5) won for only the second time since 2000 at UNC Asheville (13-14, 9-7) on Saturday, 75-68. Green finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and the Highlanders remained a game out of first in the league race.

After RU carried a 13-point lead into the intermission, the Highlanders proved they are a veteran bunch and found the resolve to overcome an Asheville rally that saw the Bulldogs take the lead on three separate occasions in the second half. Each time Radford had an answer in the form of Green or Anderson. Green's layup and first basket of the second half came at 6:51 put the Highlanders back in front, 56-55 following a 9-0 run by the Bulldogs.

Less than a minute later it was Anderson from deep with a dagger to put RU back in the lead, 59-57. His sixth three of the night at the 2:42 mark gave Radford the lead for good, 68-66 and keyed a 10-2 run to close out the game. A Green rebound and tip-in made it a two-possession game with under a minute to play, and with 23 seconds left, his defensive rebound was the 1,000th of his career and sealed the victory.

"The leadership and resolve that we showed to maintain our poise throughout the good things and bad things and focus on the next play tonight is a testament to our growth and maturity level," Radford head coach Mike Jones said. "It was the best example I have seen from our team during my time at Radford."

Just as impressive as Green and Anderson were down the stretch and showing that floor leadership to which Jones referred, R.J. Price played a complete game and scored 13 of his 20 points in the first half to lead RU to its double-digit halftime edge. Price tied a career high with seven rebounds and added three assists to go with three steals. Jalen Carethers set a career mark with nine rebounds off the bench. Brandon Holcomb scored all 10 of his points in the first half and added seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

"We executed extremely well down the stretch and got stops at the end of the game," Jones said. "The tempo we maintained for the whole game really helped us in the end. They were shooting on some tired legs."

With the win, Radford exercised some Asheville demons. The Highlanders had lost eight of nine against the Bulldogs and were just one for their last 14 on the road vs. UNCA before Saturday. The win was the sixth straight Big South road victory for the Highlanders. RU reached the 20-win mark in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1998 and the first time during regular season play since 1992.

Radford remains on the road Thursday traveling to rival Liberty for a 7:00 p.m. tip at the Vines Center. With two games remaining in the regular season, RU stands tied with Coastal Carolina and Winthrop and all three are a game shy of High Point and Charleston Southern.
