RU COMPLETES SEASON SWEEP OF HPU, NOW ATOP BIG SOUTH

|

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Radford (17-7, 8-3) won its eighth consecutive game Tuesday in a battle of the Big South's two top teams and in the process completed the season sweep of High Point (17-6, 8-3) with a wire-to-wire 67-64 victory at the Millis Center. Behind R.J. Price's 16 first half points and four three-pointers, RU stormed to a 40-29 lead at recess and held on for the win when John Brown's three rimmed off at the buzzer.

Price and the Highlanders stormed out of the gate building a 12-2 lead before the first media timeout. Price scored RU's first 10 points with a pair of treys and hitting his first five attempts from the field. The lead pushed to 15 by the midway point of the first half with Cameron Jones adding 12 of his team-high 17 in the first 20 minutes off the bench.

"I think our guys like playing here," Radford head coach Mike Jones said. "It's a small gym and a cozy environment, and our guys understood the opportunity in front of them tonight. They were terrific in the shoot around this afternoon. And down the stretch they went out at the end of the game and made just enough plays to win the game."

With Javonte Green in foul trouble for most of the night, the Highlanders found a way to hold on and turn back a High Point comeback in the second half. After shooting 62 percent from the field in the first half, RU hit just 33 percent in the second and scored just seven field goals, but the Highlanders were clutch at the free throw line down the stretch connecting on 12-14 in the second half and 13-16 for the game from the charity stripe.

Cameron Jones scored five straight points with just over six minutes to play to push a two-point lead back to seven points in a crucial stretch where Radford regained its composure.

"He has gotten more and more aggressive as the year has gone on," coach Jones said of player Jones. "And now you are seeing the results of all of his hard work pay off."

Green's bucket with 2:40 remaining was the last RU field goal, and the Highlanders sealed the game from free throw line. Brandon Holcomb and YaYa Anderson each hit both ends of a bonus opportunity in the final 20 seconds of the game to keep the Panthers at arm's length.

Brown, who scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds, missed his only shot from behind the arc on the night at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime.

The Highlanders and Panthers stand a game clear of five teams who are a game behind at 7-4 in the league standings with RU holding the tie-breaker over HPU with the sweep.

Radford will play host Friday to one of the five teams, Charleston Southern, at the Dedmon Center. Tip is at 7:00 p.m.
