RADFORD, Va. - Charleston Southern's Saah Nimley scored a career-high 39 points and dished out eight assists as the Buccaneers left the Dedmon Center with a 79-71 win Friday night brought an end to Radford's eight-game winning streak. The CSU win and RU loss, combined with other results around the Big South, left a seven-way tie for first place at 8-4.
Radford(17-8, 8-4) had defeated CSU (14-9, 8-4) on the road just eight days ago, but could not overcome a 47-35 second half in favor of the Bucs.
"We were tougher down the stretch at their place," RU head coach Mike Jones said. "We knew they were an explosive offensive team, mainly with one guy tonight. Tonight, for whatever reason, we didn't have the energy and the intensity on the defensive end. We put too much pressure on our offense tonight because our defense was so bad."
Javonte Green led the Highlanders with 18 points and eight rebounds, and Cameron Jones was stellar off the bench with 17 points, four rebounds, and a career-high five blocks, but it was not enough. Jones finished 6-7 from the field and 3-4 from behind the arc, but the Highlanders were just 5-25 from deep on the night. R.J. Price was 2-11, YaYa Anderson 0-6, and Rashun Davis 0-3.
Jalen Carethers chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds as the RU bench outscored CSU's reserves, 36-17. RU dominated the paint, 32-22, but CSU connected on 10-17 from behind the arc, including 6-11 from Nimley. He also hit 15 of his 16 free throws. Cedrick Bowen added 12 and Will Saunders 11 for the visitors.
Radford shot 50.0 percent in the first half and took a 36-32 lead to the locker room at intermission. Nimley, however, keyed a 7-0 run to open the second half for the Buccaneers and then gave CSU the lead for good with a three at the 14:59 mark. In all, it was a 16-2 run for the Bucs to open the half, and the Highlanders never fully recovered.
The Highlanders remain at home against in-state rival Longwood on Wednesday at the Dedmon Center. Tip is set for 7:00 p.m.
