HIGHLANDERS CAN'T HOLD EARLY LEAD AT TECH

|

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Behind a grand slam home run from Patrick Marshall, Radford stormed to an early 6-0 lead Wednesday at Virginia Tech, but a nine-run fourth helped lead the Hokies to an 18-8 win at English Field.

RU built the early lead on a two-run single by Josh Gardiner followed by Marshall's blast all in the top of the second inning. The Hokies cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the inning scoring three times and chasing RU starter Austin Ross in the process. Six Highlander relievers gave up 15 more runs, 12 of which were earned, including the nine-run fourth innings. Tech scored those nine runs on eight hits in the inning. Tyler Swarmer (0-1) suffered the loss for Radford (9-10).

Virginia Tech (11-10) defeated Radford for the eighth straight time with Wednesday's game being the first of three times the two teams are scheduled to play each other this season.

Gardiner led the offense as the only player in the RU lineup to post a multiple-hit evening. He finished 3-4 with a pair of RBI and another two runs scored. His batting average stands a .419 for the season. Josh Reavis and Aaron Scoville also drove in runs for the Highlanders.

Radford opens Big South Conference play at home with a three-game series beginning Friday hosting Liberty.
