HIGHLANDERS STRAND 10 BASERUNNERS IN MIDWEEK LOSS TO NO. 25 VIRGINIA TECH

RADFORD, Va. ---- The Radford softball team fell to No. 25 Virginia Tech on Wednesday night, 11-1, at the Radford Softball Stadium after stranding 10 runners on base. The Hokies scored in each of the five innings as the Highlanders called upon three different pitchers in the effort.

"We definitely need to do a better job of taking advantage of opportunities to score when we have them," said head coach Maggie White. "We got plenty of runners on in this game, but the difference was Virginia Tech stepped up with runners on and got a big hit, which we were not able to do. We need to learn how to consistently take advantage of those opportunities."

Nia Chiles, Mackenzie Blackwell and Summer Robinson contributed one hit each to Radford's three-hit total. Lindsay Graham scored the Highlanders' lone tally, coming across in the fourth inning on a double from Robinson.

Tiffany Brown started in the circle, giving up three runs on one hit after walking five in one inning of work. Taylor Asimakopoulos pitched the majority of the game for Radford, logging 3.1 innings and giving up seven runs on seven hits. Kelsey Weddle closed the game, pitching two-thirds of an inning.

Eight different Hokies notched hits in the contest, led by Michelle Prong's two. Both of Prong's knocks were for home runs, one coming in the fourth with one runner on and the second a solo shot in the fifth. Kelsey Mericka also homered in the game, hitting a two-RBI shot in the fifth. Kelly Heinz improved to 7-0 in the circle, pitching a complete, three-hit game. Heinz struck out seven and walked six in the effort.

Virginia Tech struck early in the first after loading the bases. A hit-by-pitch and walk with the bases loaded brought across the first two runs of the game. Radford threatened in the bottom of the side after putting two runners on base for Maggie Rowe, who came into tonight's matchup with the team's best batting average at .395. Rowe battled off several foul balls, but was unable to keep the frame alive, lining out to centerfield.

Coming off a one-run second inning, the Hokies extended their lead to 5-0 in the third on a pair of RBIs. The first two batters walked to reach base before Breanna Davenport singled to right field to score the lead runner. The second run came across in the next at bat as Lauren Gaskill hit a sac fly to centerfield.

Two more runs scored for Virginia Tech in the fourth on Prong's first of two home runs. The Highlanders cut into the deficit in the bottom of the inning after a two out rally. Graham, playing third base for the Red and White in the contest, walked for the second time in the game. Robinson stepped up and sent a pitch back to the wall in right-center field to score Graham all the way from first. It was Robinson's eighth RBI on the year and second double.

The Hokies put the game away in the fifth with four more runs. A leadoff hit-by-pitch put Gaskill on for Kylie McGoldrick to score on a single through the gap between first and second bases. Back-to-back homers from Mericka and Prong pushed the score to 11-1.

The Highlanders resume Big South Conference play this weekend with a three-game series in Clinton, S.C., against Presbyterian College. The Blue Hose split a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 17, against Gardner-Webb to open league play.
