RADFORD ADVANCES IN POSTSEASON FOR SECOND STRAIGHT SEASON

|

DOVER, Del. - Radford (22-11) dominated the second half Wednesday in the opening round of the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) at Delaware State (18-18) turning a tie game at the break into a comfortable 78-57 road victory to advance in postseason play for the second straight season. Javonte Green led the Highlanders with an all-around performance of 17 points, nine rebounds, and four steals.

The Highlanders opened the second half on a 23-4 run and held the Hornets to 25 percent shooting (9 for 36) in the period. Delaware State played without the services of its two leading scorer, Amere May, and the MEAC's Player and Defensive Player of the Year, Kendall Gray. May, who was sidelined with a knee injury, averages 21.0 points and is the seventh leading scorer in the country this season. Gray is the nation's top rebounder at 11.8 per game and also averages 11.7 points per game. He was unavailable with an ankle injury.

Still, the Hornets stayed in the game in the first half. DeAndre Haywood scored 15 of his game-high 21 in the first half to keep DSU even with the Highlanders. But the depth and physicality of the Radford team wore the Hornets down in the second half. Radford outrebounded Delaware State 48-33 and recorded eight blocked shots.

"In the first half we let them score a little too much and a little too easy," Radford head coach Mike Jones said. "But in the second half we really clamped down and took control."

Cameron Jones sliced his way to the hoop seemingly all night against a pourous Hornet defense hitting 7 of 12 from the field to lead the Highlanders with 18 points. Rashun Davis added 11 in his second-straight double-digit scoring effort. Three more Highlanders, R.J. Price, Brandon Holcomb, and YaYa Anderson, each added eight points. Green was a rebound away from recording his fifth straight double-double.

With the win, Radford equals its total from a year ago with 22. That ties the school record for victories as an NCAA Division I member. The Highlanders can match the school record of 23 in Monday night's CBI quarterfinal at Vermont. The 1978-79 team went 23-4 for the program record.

"I really enjoy this team," Coach Jones said. "To have another chance to play again together on Monday night is a special opportunity."

The Highlanders and Catamounts will meet for the first time in each program's history with a tipoff set for 7:00 p.m. at Patrick Gymnasium in Burlington.
