BOYLE SHUTS DOWN CAMELS IN SERIES OPENING WIN

|

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Michael Boyle stymied the Big South's top offense for 7.2 innings and moved his record to 4-2 on the season as Radford (13-11, 3-1) defeated Campbell (20-6, 4-3), 3-1 on Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium in the series opener between these league rivals. Ryan Meisinger recorded the final four outs, three by strikeout, to earn his fifth save of the season.

The Camels came into the contest leading the league in hitting with a .308 team batting average. Boyle allowed just four base hits with only one leaving the infield and gave up an unearned run. He walked one and struck out six before turning the save over to Meisinger.

"We won this game tonight because Michael Boyle beat a really good offensive club," Radford head coach Joe Raccuia said. "He got out of some jams, gave us almost 8 innings, and Meisinger came in and did what a closer is supposed to do. Those two made pitches and were able to win us a baseball game."

All the runs were scored in the first two innings as the two teams played in a light rain for the better part of the game.

After Josh Gardiner led off the game hit by a Heath Bowers pitch, Shane Johnsonbaugh gave RU the lead with a double to the right-centerfield gap plating Gardiner. Johnsonbaugh would later score on a Josh Reavis groundout, and Boyle had all the help he would need before throwing his first pitch. The Highlanders took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second in almost the same manner. Gardiner walked and Johnsonbaugh again found the gap to drive in his second run of the night with doubles in each of his first two at bats.

The Camels scored their lone run in the second. Seth LaRue beat out a bunt single to lead off the innings, and Cole Hallum followed with an infield single. Matt Parrish's sacrifice bunt turned into a throwing error by Hunter Higgerson scoring LaRue. Boyle, however, worked out of the jam without further damage. The Highlander ace then set down 14 straight Campbell batters to take control of the game.

Campbell loaded the bases in the eighth and brought the nation's second-leading home run hitter to the plate in Hallum. Meisinger struck him out looking to end the threat. After an error and a hit batter in the ninth to bring the winning run to the plate for CU, the Highlander closer again got the final out of the inning via a looking strikeout to end the game.

The two teams will play the middle game of the series Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
