RU DOMINATES SERIES FINALE IN CHARLESTON

|

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Radford (6-7) scored 11 runs on 13 hits and had seven players knock in at least one run as the Highlanders defeated College of Charleston (8-4) in the series finale at Patriot's Point on Sunday, 11-7. Josh Gardiner led the offense finishing 4 for 6 with an RBI and three runs scored. Mitchell MacKeith (2-1) earned the victory with 6.1 innings of work and allowing three runs on six hits.

The Highlander bats came alive with their second double-digit scoring performance of the season. RU defeated Binghamton 16-4 in the middle game of that series sweep last weekend, but had struggled in its last three games with six total runs. That all changed Sunday. Eight of Radford's nine starters scored at least once and the Highlanders stole six bases to keep the pressure on the Cougar defense all day.

Three more Highlanders recorded multi-hit days to go along with Gardiner's four-hit day. Josh Reavis (2-5), Brad Keen (2-5), and Chris Coia (2-5) all had a pair of hits. Coia's RBI double was also his first extra-base hit of the season.

On the mound, MacKeith was steady. He threw 100 pitches and struck out three while walking four to earn his second victory of the season. Jeff Maxwell, Daniel Bridgeman, and Ryan Meisinger all appeared in relief.

"With the exception of one inning, we played a complete baseball game in all facets," Radford head coach Joe Raccuia said. "It's a good road win on a Sunday and one that we needed. Hopefully it is something we can build off of."

The Highlanders will again attempt to play their home opener this week, weather permitting. The College of Charleston series was originally scheduled for Radford, but was moved to a road series because of weather. Radford is slated to host Youngstown State on Tuesday and Wednesday for a two-game series against the Penguins. Both games are set for 4:00 p.m. at RU Baseball Stadium.
