SOFTBALL DOWNS ETSU WITH SEVEN-RUN, TWO OUT RALLY IN FINALE, EDGED IN GAME ONE

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. ---- Trailing 4-0 with two outs on the board, a pair of home runs fueled a 7-run rally to take the second part of the doubleheader against ETSU on Wednesday night, 7-4, at the Betty Basler Field in Johnson City, Tenn. The Bucs took game one, edging out the Highlanders 5-3.

"When you come out on any given day and you are not at your best, the fact that you refuse to quit will get your far," said head coach Maggie White. "That is what we did today. We stepped up and got the job done."

Becky Mantel started the rally in game two with a three-run homer to left field. Mantel extended her streak of reaching base to 13 games after recording hits in both contests. Kayla Bishton, Mackenzie Blackwell, Whitney Davis and Mantel all cranked homers in the doubleheader. Megan Honaker had a team-high four hits, highlighted by a 3-3 effort in the finale.

Kelsey Weddle threw her third complete game of the year in game one, giving up five runs on five hits. Weddle struck out one and walked another. Taylor Asimakopoulos started game two, but was replaced by Tiffany Brown in the sixth inning. Asimakopoulos surrendered three earned runs off five hits. Brown pitched 1.1 innings before Weddle closed the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Radford (9-18, 4-4 BSC) returns to action on Tuesday, April 7, for a Big South Conference showdown at Liberty. First pitch of the doubleheader is at 2 p.m. The series finale will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8. The Highlanders are 4-4 in league play and have won two of three series.

ETSU 5 :: RADFORD 3

Radford jumped out to an early lead after Casey Burns scored Honaker from second with her 22nd hit of the year. Honaker reached after lacing a double into left-center field. It was her first extra base hit of the year.

Bishton extended the Red and White's lead in the top of the second with a leadoff homer over the centerfield wall. She has two home runs this season and is one of three players to have a double, triple and home run this year. Bishton's first long ball came at the ETSU Tournament on March 8. Blackwell followed Bishton's lead, hitting her second home run in as many games to put Radford up 3-0.

Cassi Pickett knotted the game 3-3 in the third inning with one swing of the bat. A pair of leadoff singles put two runners on base for Pickett, who recorded her fifth home run of the season over the left field wall.

ETSU (12-19, 1-5 SoCon) took its first lead on its second long ball of the game and fourth between the two sides. Kelsey Smith led the bottom of the fourth with a homer over the outreached glove of Mantel in centerfield.

The Bucs extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single hit to centerfield by Taylor Carter. Carter's poke brought Jennine Duncan into score, making it 5-3 in ETSU's favor.
