COASTAL EVENS SERIES IN NAIL-BITER

|

CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina's Zach Remillard hit a two-run double in the sixth that proved the difference in a 3-2 victory over Radford (24-13, 11-3) on Saturday at Springs Brooks Stadium. The Highlanders and Chanticleers (27-11, 11-3) moved back into a tie atop the Big South standings with a deciding game remaining in the series on Sunday.

Radford stranded 10 runners, including two in scoring position in the ninth, and Highlander batters were 0-9 with runners in scoring position. The loss snapped RU's nine-game road winning streak, which was tied for the longest in the nation entering the night.

The Highlanders twice took one-run leads, but could not push across a tying run in the final three frames once the Chants took the lead. Shane Johnsonbaugh's RBI double into the left centerfield gap plated Josh Reavis, who reach on a two-out infield single in the fourth.

"This was a high-spirited middle game of the series," RU skipper Joe Raccuia said. "Everyone competed on both sides of the baseball, but they executed some plays and we made a couple mistakes and that can be the difference in close games."

A throwing error by RU starter Dylan Nelson on a sacrifice bunt allowed the tying run to come across for CCU in the fifth. In the top half of the sixth, Hunter Higgerson broke the 1-1 tie with his third home run of the season on the first pitch offered in the inning off Coastal starter Austin Kerr.

Kerr would not survive the inning and did not factor in the decision. The win went to Mike Morrison (2-1), who replaced Kerr and worked 3.0 scoreless allowing two hits. He benefitted from Remillard's game-winning hit in the sixth. Bobby Holmes, despite giving up back-to-back singles to Brad Keen and Chris Coia to open the ninth, struck out three straight Highlanders to earn the save.

"We had a chance late to put up a run or two and didn't come through," Raccuia said. "Coastal is a good baseball team, and we have to be ready to play tomorrow. We have our work cut out for us."

Radford outhit Coastal 9-7 with Reavis (2-2) the only Highlander to record multiple hits. Remillard (2-4) was the only Chant to log multiple hits.

Sunday's series finale is scheduled at noon.
