HIGHLANDERS TAKE SEASON SERIES FROM HOKIES

|

PHOTO GALLERY • RADFORD, Va. - Zack Ridgely tossed 6.0 strong innings, and Josh Reavis drove in three runs for Radford as the Highlanders won the third and deciding game of the season series against Virginia Tech (19-22), 7-4, on Tuesday night at RU Baseball Stadium. Josh Gardiner also homered, doubled, and scored three runs for Radford (26-13), which won for the 19th time in 23 games.

Gardiner's solo home run to right-center to lead off the bottom of the third opened the scoring. It was his third round-tripper of the season and gave the Highlanders a lead they would never relinquish. After Shane Johnsonbaugh singled following Gardiner's blast, he move to second a wild pitch, to third on a Reavis fly ball, and scored on a Patrick Marshall groundout to give RU a 2-0 advantage.

The Highlanders added two more runs in the fifth. Chris Coia led off with one of his three hits on the night, and Gardiner doubled over the third base bag to put runners in scoring position. Johnsonbaugh reached on an infield single that led to a Tech throwing error, and Coia came across to make it 3-0. Reavis then singled home Gardiner to push the lead to 4-0.

Ridgely (2-1) worked six complete innings, and his only blemish was a two-out home run to Erik Payne in the sixth. Otherwise, the freshman lefty was stellar allowing only three hits and striking out six. He issued one walk.

After Payne cut the lead to 4-1, the Highlanders responded with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Reavis drove in a pair with a single, and Marshall added an RBI base hit to increase the RU advantage to 7-1.

Kyle Palmer gave up a hit in his one inning of relief in the seventh, and Austin Ross pitched the eighth. Ross allowed a leadoff single to Ryan Tufts and then a double to Saige Jenco before striking out the next two batters. He was one strike away from getting out of the jam when Payne connected on his second home run of the night, a three-run shot to cut the RU lead to 7-4.

"Besides one pitch, that was one of the better played games we have had all year long," Radford head coach Joe Raccuia said. "We had some big two-out hits. Ridgely was really good. It was just a good night of baseball."

Ryan Meisinger worked a perfect ninth inning to record his 10th save of the season.

Packy Naughton (1-1) took the loss on the mound for the Hokies lasting 3.0 innings and allowing two runs on four hits in his start.

Radford hosts High Point in an important Big South three-game series beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m. at RU Baseball Stadium.
