BASEBALL CLINCHES AT LEAST SHARE OF LEAGUE TITLE, DOWNS UNC ASHEVILLE 6-2

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ---- After being held scoreless in four-consecutive innings, No. 23 Radford engineered a four-run sixth inning fueled by Patrick Marshall's leadoff home run to down UNC Asheville, 6-2. The Highlanders have won a program-record 18 Big South contests on the year and have clinched at least a share of the Big South title.

"I thought (Michael) Boyle pitched really well," said head coach Joe Raccuia. "His pitch count was high, but he made enough pitches.  (Daniel) Bridgeman and (Ryan) Meisinger did what they were supposed to do. Offensively, we had timely hits from (Patrick) Marshall and (Aaron) Scoville. We need to not leave so many on base, but we will learn it and be ready tomorrow."

Marshall paced Radford (37-14, 18-4 BSC) at the plate with three hits and an RBI. He notched his 28th and 29th extra base hits of the season with a home run and double in the effort. Aaron Scoville and Danny Hrbek had two hits each as Brad Keen led the Highlanders with two RBI. Scoville had a game-high two runs.

Michael Boyle earned the win on the mound, throwing six-complete innings. Boyle struck out five batters while holding the Bulldogs (21-32, 5-16 BSC) to two runs. Daniel Bridgeman started the seventh inning and threw two innings with two punch outs. Ryan Meisinger closed the game in the ninth.

Radford opened the game with back-to-back singles hit through the right side by Josh Reavis and Marshall to put runners on the corners. Hunter Higgerson skied a sac-fly into left field to score Reavis for his 45th RBI of the season.

UNC Asheville responded in the bottom of the opening frame with one run. After recording two outs, Boyle surrendered a pair of singles to bring in Tommy Houmard who reached on a walk.

The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game in the third on an RBI single by Eric Connolly hit to right-centerfield. Hunter Bryan came in to score on the shot after reaching base on a walk.

Marshall knotted the score at two apiece in the sixth with a lead off home run hit to right-centerfield. It was his team-best 11th long ball of the season. Keen laid down a bunt to score Higgerson and put Radford ahead 3-2. Trevor Riggs extended the Highlanders' lead with a shot down the left line that bounced off third base and into the outfield, scoring Scoville. The final run of the frame came across on a chopper hit by Chris Coia down the first baseline.

Keen put the Red and White up 6-2 in the eighth with his fourth triple of the season. The hit sent to right-centerfield scored Scoville, who reached on his second single of the evening.

With Thursday's victory over the Bulldogs and Coastal Carolina's loss at Campbell, Radford has clinched at least a share of its first-ever Big South title.

The Highlanders and UNC Asheville will play game two of the series Friday, May 15, at 3 p.m. Dylan Nelson will be on the mound for Radford, against the Bulldogs' Jordan Fulbright.
