GAME INFORMATION

  • Records: Radford (9-8, 2-3) | Gardner-Webb (10-8, 5-1)
  • Location: Paul Porter Arena | Boiling Springs, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Radford was unable to slow down a hot Gardner-Webb team Saturday afternoon as the Runnin' Bulldogs used torrid first-half shooting to build a big halftime lead en route an 83-61 Big South win.
  • Gardner-Webb shot 67 percent and made 7 of 12 3-point attempts in the opening 20 minutes as it notched its fifth straight victory and fourth in conference play.
  • Trying to hang close, the Highlanders were within six with 6:20 left in the half before getting just two more baskets before the break. The Runnin' Bulldogs, meanwhile, kept up their offensive pace and closed with a 19-4 run to build a commanding 49-28 advantage.
  • After GWU opened the second half with a basket, Radford went on an 11-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 14, but could not get any close after that.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Rashun Davis was the lone Highlander to reach double figures with 14 points. He recorded one assist, the 384th of his career to take over fourth place alone in program history, passing Rod Cousin.
  • Radford was at 50 percent shooting from the field with four minutes to go in the first half, but missed six of its last seven attempts before halftime on its way to 35 percent for the game.
  • After making 20 of its 30 shots in the opening half, Gardner-Webb cooled off to 37 percent in the second stanza, but still finished at 53 percent for the game, including 9 of 19 from behind the arc.
  • GWU's 49 first-half points equaled the most allowed by the Highlanders in any half this season. VCU scored 49 in the second half of that game.
  • The rebounding battle between two of the league's best was close, with the Runnin' Bulldogs taking a 39-38 edge. The Highlanders did grab 19 offensive rebounds. Ed Polite, Jr. and Darius Bolstad each had seven to lead RU, including four offensive.
  • GWU totaled 20 assists on its 30 field goals and turned 16 Radford turnovers into 19 points. Coming in ranked 12th in the nation in steals per game with 9.4, the Runnin' Bulldogs totaled 11 in the game.
  • Senior guard Harold McBride scored a game-high 24 points to lead Gardner-Webb. After going just 6 for 26 shooting in the last two games, he set the tone by scoring 12 of the team's first 20 points. McBride was 6 of 7 from the field in the first half before finishing 8 of 12, while dishing out nine assists.
  • Tyrell Nelson recorded his conference-leading seventh double-double of the year, with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Isaiah Ivey hit 3 of 5 3-pointers and totaled 10 points, including seven in the opening half.

QUOTABLE
  • "They were focused and came out and executed their gameplan right from the beginning of the game whereas we didn't play very well in the first half and certainly didn't execute the things that we had talked about right out of the gate. It's unfortunate. We decided that we wanted to do some things in the second half, but by then it was too late." ~ Radford head coach Mike Jones

UP NEXT
  • Radford returns home to host conference co-leader UNC Asheville Thursday night.
