WALSH'S FIRST HALF GOAL GIVES RADFORD BIG SOUTH OPENING WIN

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. –  Radford opened up Big South play with a 1-0 win over Gardner-Webb, giving the Highlanders their seventh consecutive conference opening win, Saturday afternoon inside Greene-Harbison Stadium.
 
The first 10 minutes of the match saw two conference foes trade shots early, totaling two shots apiece. The first two shots of the match miss wide and blocked by the opposing defense.
 
After the Runnin' Bulldog defense blocked a Jakob Strandsäter shot, RU maintained possession of the ball. A touch pass by Victor Valls found Michael Walsh, who finished the ball to the right post for his second goal of the season in the 19th minute.
 
Gardner-Webb attempted to knot the match in the 26th minute as Severin Gwum Soerlie fired a shot on goal, but could not shake Aitor Pouseu Blanco.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs attempted two shots in the final minute of the first half, but the RU defense blocked the attempts.
 
At halftime, Gardner-Webb held a 6-5 shot advantage with both teams having one shot on goal.
 
The second half saw an array of Gardner-Webb shots as the Runnin' Bulldogs tallied seven in the final 45 minutes, two coming on goal.
 
Radford only managed two shots in the second half, but its lights out defense collected its fourth shutout of the season and first since Sept. 3.
