RADFORD, Va. – In a season that included some strong individual performances on both the men's and women's sides, the Radford cross country teams will look to put it all together Friday morning when they compete in the 2016 Big South Championships in Asheville, N.C.
Â
The women's 5K race is set for 10:30 a.m. start, with the men's 8K race beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Â
Radford's men have finished fourth in the meet the previous two years, but will feature a much different lineup in this year's event. However, the group had a strong showing in the conference's preview meet on the Asheville Christian Academy course earlier this month. Five Highlanders finished among the top 22, led by Frisco Poole (4th), Cameron Mims (9th) and Ashenafi Kidanu (12th). Kidanu is among a trio that clocked personal-bests 8K times in their last two races.
Â
Looking to break through and claim its first top-three finish in the conference since 1998, Radford will likely be battling High Point and UNC Asheville for that position. The Highlanders are also seeking to have their first All-Conference runner since 2008.
Â
For the women, the senior tandem of Courtney Burton and Courtney Rice will be aiming for strong finishes as they compete in their last conference cross country championship. The majority of the rest of lineup has progressed in recent weeks and the Highlanders expect a better overall team race on the course than they had in the preview meet when they got off to a slow start. They will likely contend with Winthrop and UNC Asheville for the spots in the top half.
