  • Location: Dedmon Center | Radford, Va.

RADFORD, Va. – Radford saw its six-game home winning streak come to end Saturday afternoon, dropping a 72-60 decision to Coastal Carolina for its first Big South Conference loss of the season inside the Dedmon Center.

Rashun Davis scored a game-high 22 points, along with five steals and three assists for the Highlanders, while Cameron Jones added 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

However, as was the case in the teams' first meeting, Radford was unable to overcome a poor offensive first half. After hitting five of its first eight shots in the opening five minutes for an 11-6 lead, RU connected on just 4 of 19 attempts the remainder of the half, finishing the opening 20 minutes at 33 percent. Coastal took the lead with a 14-6 run over the middle part of the half, had a six-point advantage at halftime and stayed in front the rest of the game.

After the Chanticleers pushed the advantage to double digits early in the second half, the Highlanders made several runs to get close, but each time Coastal was able to answer. A 3-pointer by Davis, a fast-break layup by Jones and an alleyoop dunk by Brandon Holcomb off a Jones pass comprised a 7-0 run that made it 53-49 with 5:23 left, but the Chanticleers scored seven of the next 10 points to push the cushion back up to nine and pulled away to their seventh straight victory.

Radford next faces a trip to conference leader UNC Asheville for a 9 p.m. tipoff Thursday night on ESPNU before returning home for a rematch with Winthrop Saturday at 12 p.m.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • With his 22 points in the game, Davis continued his climb up the program's all-time scoring list. He now ranks 15th with 1,204. He shot 9 for 19 from the field, including 4 of 9 from 3-point range.
  • Radford fell to 8-2 on the season coming off a loss, suffering consecutive defeats for the first time since Dec. 9 - the same date as the last setback at home.
  • The Highlanders' 26 first-half points tied for their season-low at home this season with the James Madison game and the 60 for the game was the lowest at home since the victory over Liberty on Dec. 3.
  • RU improved its shooting in the second half to 40 percent, but Coastal was also better in the second 20 minutes, hitting on 57 percent to finish at an even 50 percent for the game.
  • Along with its poor shooting, RU also committed eight of its 11 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. The Highlanders were able to force Coastal into 13 turnovers in the game and capitalized on them for 21 points.
  • The Chanticleers scored 32 points in the first half, with 22 of them coming inside the paint. They finished with a 40-26 advantage in that area for the game, the same 14-point margin that they had in the first meeting.
  • Elijah Wilson scored 19 points to lead four Coastal players in double figures. After his 0 for 10 game on Wednesday, he shot 6 for 14 from the field on Saturday. Jaylen Shaw added 14 points, including a huge 3-pointer that ended RU's 7-0 run late. Badou Diagne totaled 13 points and 16 rebounds to help Coastal to a 38-34 advantage on the glass.

QUOTABLE
  • "I just thought they were more physical than us in every aspect. They beat us on the boards and got timely offensive rebounds when we got stops, especially late in the second half. When they drove the ball they were able to get right to the rim and a lot of times they scored. I thought our guys were ready to play, but offensively we struggled to score. Defensively, they're one of the best teams in the league because they're physical, they rebound the ball and they force you to shoot jumpshots. We fell for the trap in the first half and shot it on their terms instead of ours. We didn't get it done today, but there's a lot of season left. We've got to be tougher than we were today to get done what we need to get done." ~ Radford head coach Mike Jones
