PROMISING FUTURE IN STORE AS HIGHLANDERS CLOSE INAUGURAL SEASON

RADFORD, Va. – Tied at 5 with 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Coastal Carolina scored eight unanswered goals to create enough separation to notch a 20-8 victory over Radford to close the Highlanders' inaugural women's lacrosse season Saturday afternoon at Cupp Stadium.

Emily Hoke, Radford's only senior, was honored prior to opening draw for the leadership she provided as the young Highlanders navigated through their first season of competition.

RU came out determined and the score reflected that mentality for nearly the entire opening stanza. Juliette Ruland netted three of her season-high-tying four goals during the first 20 minutes of the Highlanders' regular-season finale. Her third tally tied the score at 5.

From there, the Chanticleers reeled off eight in a row to swing momentum to their side and propel them to their fifth Big South win of the season.

In addition to Ruland, Avery Reding, Emma Rogers, Adrian Rius and Gracie Peterson also found the back of the net for Radford. Rogers and Peterson tacked on assists to their stat lines.

Rius racked up a game-high seven draw controls, marking the ninth time this season she collected at least five in a game. Her performance allowed the Highlanders to keep the draw control battle close, with Coastal edging RU, 15-14.

Charlotte O'Leary and Courtney Genovese both delivered five goals apiece to pace the Chanticleers' offensive attack. Coastal outshot the Highlanders, 41-15.

Even though Radford's season ended, its inaugural season will not be remembered by its record. Instead, it will be remembered for the promise this young team has in store in the coming years. Seventeen Highlanders are set to return for the 2017 campaign.
