RADFORD RALLY COMES UP SHORT IN 5-4 DEFEAT

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team tried to fight back from an early four-run deficit, but Coastal Carolina held on for a 5-4 decision in the final game of teams' Big South Conference series Sunday afternoon.

Becky Mantel had an RBI single and Summer Robinson's three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth made it a one-run game, but the Highlanders (20-14, 4-5) were unable to fully overcome costly errors that led to five unearned runs.

Kayla Bishton had two of Radford's seven hits, while Coastal totaled 11. Abby Morrow struck out five and walked a season-high three – although all three were issued to slugger Morgan Noad.

The Chanticleers scored four times in the third inning after Morrow had retired the first two batters, but a throwing error extended the frame. Coastal capitalized by recording five straight hits, including an RBI double by Noad and a two-run homer by Kelsey Dominik, her 13th of the season. Three singles and a fielding error plated another run.

Radford got one back in the bottom of the inning when Casey Burns led off with a single, advanced to second on an illegal pitch, moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on Mantel's two-out single to left.

A fielding error and two bunt singles loaded the bases for Coastal (20-18, 5-4) with no outs in the fourth. However, after a bases-loaded walk made it 5-1, Morrow got a pair of forceouts at home and a flyout to limit the damage.

The Highlanders mounted their rally in the sixth following an error to start the inning. Bishton hit her eighth double of the season and Robinson followed by drilling her third homer of the year over the left-field fence. Dominik (13-9), though, retired the final five batters to close it out.

Radford returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Appalachian State for a mid-week doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
