RADFORD FALLS TO CAMPBELL IN TOURNAMENT OPENER

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Fourth-seeded Radford dropped an 11-2 decision to fifth-seeded Campbell in its opening game of the Big South Tournament Wednesday afternoon.

The Highlanders (32-25) will now face No. 9 seed Winthrop in an elimination contest Thursday at 9 a.m. After defeating Gardner-Webb 9-5 in the play-in game, Winthrop took a 5-0 lead over Longwood before the top seed scored 13 unanswered runs.

In the opening game loss, Radford saw Campbell score seven runs of their runs on two-out hits, while the Highlanders stranded 12 runners, including seven in scoring position. Three RU errors also led to five unearned runs in the game.

Campbell got on the board in the top of the first using three singles and a walk. After the Highlanders got a forceout at home for the second out, Carolyn Smith grounded one just past diving shortstop Marissa Gagliano for a 2-0 lead.

Radford had a chance to answer after Gagliano doubled to left-center – her 11th of the season – with one out. She advanced to third on a groundout and Becky Mantel reached on a hit by pitch to put runners on the corners, but a strikeout ended the threat.

The Fighting Camels then added three runs in the second on a double, bunt single, sacrifice fly and a pair of two-out base hits and fielding error. The Highlanders then let another opportunity get away in the bottom of the inning after a leadoff single by Whitney Davis and a walk to Marissa Yow. They moved up on a sacrifice, but were stranded there with one out.

Radford broke through in the fourth for its runs after leading the bases with no outs on another single by Davis and walks by two different Campbell pitchers. Following a forceout at the plate, Hannah Medlam hit an RBI grounder to the right side and reached on a fielding error and Gagliano was hit by a pitch to bring home the second run. However, another forceout at home and a strikeout left the bases loaded.

Campbell got the two runs back in the top of the fifth, capitalizing on a throwing error with another two-out, two-run single.

The Highlanders got another good start to an inning in the bottom of the frame as Summer Robinson singled and Davis reached on a fielder's choice, with Robinson advancing to second, but they came up empty after a groundball double play and groundout.

A two-run homer by Smith in the sixth then made it 9-2 and the Camels capped the scoring with two more in the seventh, finishing with 17 hits, tied for the most allowed by the Highlanders in a game this season.

Lauren McIntyre started and allowed four earned runs on seven hits in two innings. Abby Morrow pitched the final five innings, allowing two earned runs. Davis went 2 for 4 at the plate, with five other players collecting one hit.
