RADFORD FINISHES HIGHLANDER INVITE 3-0 WITH WIN OVER ST. FRANCIS

RADFORD, Va. – Radford will start the season 3-0 for the second consecutive year after a dominating performance over St. Francis (N.Y.) in the final match of the 2016 Highlander Invitational.

The opening set was dominated by Stephanie Neast and Maddie Palmer as the duo combined for 11 kills as the Highlanders finished with a .438 attacking percentage in the 25-12 set win.

Haley Kleespies started the second set with a service ace, sparking the Highlanders to score 12 straight points, forcing St. Francis to burn their two timeouts. The run saw six kills, three by Lidija Mamic and three aces from Kleespies.

St. Francis would only manage seven points in the second set, getting only three of their 30 attacking attempts to fall.

The final set saw both squads trade points back and forth, but Radford pulled away with a four-point span that saw three kills from Palmer, extending the RU lead to 16-7. The Terriers were unable to avoid errors as the Highlanders capped of their second sweep of the day.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Maddie Palmer finished the invitational with 56 kills in 98 attempts for a .480 attacking percentage, earning MVP honors in the process.
  • Palmer collected her second double-double of the day, finishing with 15 kills and 13 digs.
  • Haley Kleespies finished the match with 39 assists, increasing her total to 121 for the invitational, earning all-tournament team honors.
  • Kleespies finished with a career-high five service aces.
  • Stephanie Neast contributed nine kills, finishing with a .563 attacking percentage.
  • Putting together another strong performance in her third collegiate game, Sydney Tekstra finished with eight kills, her second eight-kill effort of the weekend.
  • Following Palmer's match-high 13 digs, Kaylor Nash finished with 11.

QUOTABLE
  • "We finished the invitational really strong. It's always a great thing when you start the season off 3-0. All of our freshman had a chance to play and contribute, which is the biggest thing. They got their feet under them and we will face stronger competition next week, so we will see how they respond to that. Overall, a good performance by everyone." ~ Radford head coach Marci Jenkins

 UP NEXT
  • Radford will take the midweek off for the start of classes, returning to action on Friday in the UAB/Samford Tournament. Friday, will see the Highlanders will take on Tennessee Tech (10 a.m.) and Samford (7 p.m.). RU will face Southeast Missouri State (12:30 p.m.) and UAB (7 p.m.) on Saturday.
