RADFORD COLLECTS SEVENTH SWEEP WITH WIN OVER OHIO



BLACKSBURG, Va. – Radford completed its seventh sweep of the season defeating Ohio (25-23, 25-21, 25-16) as the Highlanders tallied 10 blocks and eight aces in the opening match of the Hokie Invitational inside Cassell Coliseum.
 
The Highlanders stormed out to an 8-2 advantage in the opening set on two kills each by Valerie Gonzalez and Maddie Palmer. RU pushed the lead to 19-12 as the Highlanders looked to close out a dominating opening set. Despite being down seven points, Ohio put together a 7-3 run to force a RU timeout.
 
Mallory McKnight held off the charge with a kill to give RU a 24-21 set point. The Bobcats made things interesting with back-to-back points to pull within 24-23. Ohio's comeback fell short on an Ali Lake attacking error, giving Radford the opening set 25-23.
 
Ohio and Radford traded points to open the second set, before the Highlanders took control with a six straight points. Amaya Rousseau shined during the run with two kills and a solo block. The six-point swing gave the Highlanders a 12-6 lead.
 
Leading 17-9, Ohio put together a run of their own. The Bobcats went on an 8-3 run, cutting the RU lead to 20-18. Rousseau ended the run, collecting three of her five kills in the set to give RU a 25-21 set win.
 
The third set saw the Highlanders and Bobcats exchange leads, before the Highlanders took control of the set. Radford closed out the final set with nine straight points, aided by four Bobcat errors as the Highlanders completed their seventh sweep with a 25-16 commanding win.

  • Radford and Ohio met for the first time in their program histories.
  • The Highlanders finished with 10 blocks with four solo and 12 assisted.
  • Mallory McKnight assisted on five blocks, giving her 21 block assists on the season.
