RADFORD DOWNS CAMPBELL IN FOUR, MOVES TO 3-0 IN BSC

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Radford volleyball team notched its second straight road win and improved to 3-0 in Big South Conference play by holding off Campbell in four sets Saturday afternoon.

After taking the first two sets 25-21 and 25-23, the Highlanders did not get their 10th sweep, as Campbell came back for a 25-16 win in the third. However, Radford rebounded to outlast the Fighting Camels 27-25 and close out the match. The Highlanders are now 12-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference for the first time since 2001.

Campbell (6-10, 1-1) scored the opening point of the match, but Radford took the next four and maintained at least a two-point cushion throughout, closing the set out on a kill by Valerie Gonzalez. Maddie Palmer led the way with five kills and two aces in the game, while Mallory McKnight and Sydney Tekstra each added three kills.

In the second set, two kills by Gonzalez and one by Tekstra led to a four-point run and an early 6-2 lead. The Highlanders eventually built the advantage to eight at 13-5 before the Campbell used an 8-1 spurt to take a 19-17 edge. After an RU timeout, a McKnight and a Campbell error tied it up. Trailing 21-20, the Highlanders scored the next four points on two kills by Palmer, one by Amaya Rousseau and another by Gonzalez. Campbell saved two set points, but a service error gave RU the commanding 2-0 lead.

Campbell controlled much of the third set, used a 6-0 run to pull out to a 19-12 advantage and scored the last three points to extend the match.

Radford started the fourth strong, scoring four of the first points and building an 11-6 advantage. However, the Fighting Camels answered back with another 8-1 spurt for a 14-12 lead. The teams went back and forth from there, and two Campbell errors gave the Highlanders a 24-22 edge. The home team went on to save three match points before a service error and an attack error provided the clinching points.
