  • Location: Dedmon Center | Radford, Va.

RADFORD, Va. – Ed Polite, Jr. kept his streak of double-doubles going, but it wasn't enough for the Radford men's basketball team to snap its recent winless run at home as Campbell posted a 78-61 victory Thursday night in the Dedmon Center.

Polite, Jr. totaled 12 points and 10 rebounds to notch his fifth consecutive double-double and 10th of the season. He also added team-highs of five steals and three assists, while Justin Cousin led the Highlanders in scoring with 18 points, including five 3-pointers.

However, behind standout guard Chris Clemons, Campbell led nearly the entire way and stymied Radford from rallying in the second half with 57 percent shooting in the game. Clemons, the Big South's leading scorer and eighth in the nation, tallied 20 of his 36 points in the opening half helping the Fighting Camels to a 37-25 lead.

After struggling shooting in the first 20 minutes, the Highlanders got back-to-back 3-pointers by Caleb Tanner and Cousin early in the second half, but Campbell answered with two straight on the other end, including one by Clemons that made it 50-31. It was a 21-point margin with 11:37 left, before another 3-pointer by Cousin started an 8-0 run that cut the deficit to 57-44 and energized the largest Dedmon Center crowd of the season. However, the Camels responded with five straight points to pull back away.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Polite, Jr. made 5 of 7 shots, while again filling the stat sheet in just about every category. He recorded six points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists in the first half alone.
  • Cousin returned to double figures after a one-game break, hitting 6 of 12 shots, including 5 of 9 from behind the arc. He has led the team in scoring in four of the last five games.
  • Caleb Tanner added eight points, while Sterling Christy chipped in five points, four rebounds and a career-high tying three assists.
  • However, Radford's recent first-half offensive struggles continued with 32 percent (9 of 28) shooting, including 3 for 11 on 3's. The Highlanders again improved to 50 percent in the second half, including 5 of 13 behind the arc.
  • Campbell, meanwhile, connected on 8 of its first 11 attempts and went on to make 64 percent (14 of 22) overall in the 20 minutes. The Fighting Camels also hit 10 of their 19 3-point attempts, the second-most by a Radford opponent on the season.
  • Clemons, who was coming off a season-low 10 points in the last game, shot 13 of 24 on the night to finish one-point shy of his career-high of 37 earlier this month against Charleston Southern.
  • He was backed up by Shane Whitfield (16 points) and Kyre' Hamer (15) points, who combined to make 12 of 16 from the field. Hamer hit all three of his 3-point attempts.
  • Campbell's 57 percent shooting for the game was the highest against the Highlanders since the UNC Wilmington game on Dec. 17. The Fighting Camels were just the second Big South opponent to hit over 50 percent against RU in nine games.
  • Campbell snapped its four-game losing streak to Radford, while the Highlanders have now suffered four straight setbacks at home after starting the season 5-0.

QUOTABLE
  • "They shoot 64 percent in the first half and a lot of them were layups. They drove repeatedly down the middle and we weren't able to stop them so they got their confidence early and it was hard to turn that water off once it got started. Right now, teams are geared up to take away our ability to shoot the ball and we've got to make some adjustments. We have at times, but sometimes we haven't. They played a great game and that coupled with us playing a poor game led to this outcome. We've battled at home, but have just come up short. " ~ Radford head coach Mike Jones

UP NEXT
  • Radford now faces a quick turnaround as it plays Saturday at 12 p.m. on the road at UNC Asheville.
