RADFORD SWEEPS WINTHROP CAPPING A 2-0 WEEKEND AT HOME

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford volleyball team swept Winthrop with a total team effort on Saturday evening inside the Dedmon Center.
 
Mallory McKnight and the Highlanders (16-3, 6-2 Big South) continued their success from Friday night jumping out to a 16-6 lead in the first set. McKnight tallied four kills through the first 16 points. Winthrop (13-9, 4-4 Big South) battled back and cut the deficit to as low as eight, 20-12, but a 5-2 run capped off by a Valerie Gonzalez kill ended the set 25-14.
 
The Eagles made the second set a little closer as there were six ties and two lead changes. With the set tied at 12, a Stephanie Neast kill put the Highlanders ahead 13-12. The kill was the start to a 13-3 set-ending run. The Highlanders picked up 15 kills in the set as six different players recorded at least one.
 
Radford fell behind in the third set by two on four separate occasions, early in the set. The Eagles maintained the lead and increased it with a 3-0 run with the set tied at nine. The Highlanders went on tear scoring the next seven points taking a 16-12 lead. The lead increased to as high as six points, 23-17. Winthrop scored the next point, but a kill by Gonzalez and an Eagle attack error sealed the sweep.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
•  Radford led the way in almost every statistical category; including 51-30 in kills, 62-47 in digs, 47-28 in assists and 7-3 in blocks.
•  The Highlanders held the Eagles to a .101 hitting percentage and only 30 kills.
•  Stephanie Neast led the way with 13 kills, while Maddie Palmer tallied 11. Amaya Rousseau and Mallory McKnight picked up nine each.
•  Haley Kleespies picked up 39 of the Highlanders 47 assists.
•  Radford recorded a .342 hitting percentage including a .432 hitting percentage and 19 kills in the final set.
•  Alyssa Carruth and Kaylor Nash combined for 35 digs. Carruth had 18 and Nash picked up 17.
•  Rousseau had four total blocks including one solo block. Gonzalez and Palmer each had one solo block.
 
QUOTABLE
"I thought we played really well this weekend. Our pass serve game was back on target like it was earlier in the year, which is nice to see. We have been practicing better as well and this was a really good weekend for us. These are big wins against two teams that are neck-and-neck with us in the standings. It was pretty pressure packed to make sure we came out and handled business and we did." ~ Marci Jenkins
