JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – North Florida pitchers combined for eight innings of four-hit baseball with 11 strikeouts as Radford dropped its season opener 9-0, Friday night in the first meeting between the two opponents.

After a scoreless first inning, North Florida exploded for four runs in the bottom of the second. Following a leadoff single by Yahir Gurrola, Radford starter Zack Ridgely collected two quick outs as Wesley Weeks walked to put runners on the corners.

Rey Gonzalez broke the scoreless game with a RBI single to left and Mac Wilson added a two-run double down the left field line to push the lead to 3-0. The Ospreys tacked another run onto its lead on a Danny Hrbek fielding error to control a 4-0 edge after two innings.

Cody Schneider gave the Highlanders their first hit in the third inning with a double into the left-center field gap. Radford was unable to push across a run in the inning.

North Florida added two more runs to its lead in the fourth inning on a Joe Boyle solo home run and Patrick Ervin single.

Boyle greeted newly entered Trey Alderman in the bottom of the sixth with his second solo home run to left field. North Florida added two more runs in the seventh inning to command a 9-0 lead.

Held to only two hits through the first six innings, Radford collected two in the seventh as Jonathan Gonzalez led off the inning with a single to center field. Clayton Baine later collected a single in the inning to put runners on first and second with one out. The Highlanders were unable to scratch across a run as pinch hitter Richard De la Cruz lined out to second base to end the Radford threat.

Radford continues the series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. matchup. Hrbek will make his first collegiate start on the mound after last pitching for the Highlanders in 2014.
